I've tried to load mmc 9.x off the installation cd and also the latest off ati.com and I always get:
Unhandled exception
error: 0x80040705
description: string accessed out of bounds
I tried loading the latest drivers for my radeon mobility 9700 but still the same....
From what I've found on the web there is some .dll that is in conflict with mmc (I gather) and therefore it will not load... Any ideas on how to figure out what's in conflict or will I have to rebuild the entire system for this o so great ati product... It loaded fine on my other system BUT messed up a bunch of other components so I decided to dedicate it to the laptop... no such luck.
this is the ati usb2 wonder I'm trying...

This is totally reminding me of when I worked for a big company and I would have a problem that would repeat itself... Then I would finally break down and call the IT guy. When he would arrive I would try to reproduce the problem and it would solve itself!
I call ATI and while I'm being transferred around I'm trying a re-install and it somehow makes it through the mmc install and then has an error in a different component. It restarts the install on it's own *shrug* bounces around the install process at random and vola.? On a restart works okay...
Don't ask me! The "senior tech" says they have been tracking the problem since october and congradulates me on being the first to over come it... Lucky me? :P

Hi, I have just install the exact same device, the ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0, and was getting exactly the same error. What I did to correct the problem was not difficult, but just tedious. When I searched in Google for the error ATI had it in their FAQ. That error relates to the USB update for WinXP, which is on the CD itself, and is installed when you install the complete installation. It seems that Windows XP Service Pack 2 is required in order for you to get the device to work. Here is what I did:
1.) I went to ATI website and downloaded latest driver for my video card. ATI 9600 Radeon chip.
2.) Go to Microsoft's download page to find the XP SP2 file for Advanced users (about 272391 KB).
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368...displaylang=en
3.) After getting both files, with my friend's recommendation, disabled all Startup Group Items in the System Configuration Utility [Start-Run-MSCONFIG] Reboot system when prompted. *** This will also delete any previous Restore points. If you have other issues with system stability, back up your files and reinstall your OS before continuing. ***
4.) With all startup items disabled, then run the XP SP2 update file that you just downloaded. Allow it to update your system and reboot when prompted.
5.) Install the latest video driver for your video card. I ran the file I downloaded for my ATI 9600 Radeon card. Reboot again.
6.) Install the software that came with the ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0, and used Express option to install everything. Connect the TV tuner device when prompted. Reboot system again when prompted.
Eventhough this took all night for me, but the error never came up at all, and now all program installed functioned fine and working properly. Hope this helps you.
