If I'm just capturing using a Canopus ADVC-100 box, do either of these/any of these decoder/encoders help me?

I'm using Vegas Movie Studio to create my "movies" and then frameserving them to TMPGEnc.

nope - dv is a transfer .. doesnt mater what type of codec you have for this operation as the compression is done in the device -- and vegas uses its own codec for RE-encoding DV

Vegas Movie Studio includes the MainConcept MPeg1 and MPeg2 encoders. So you are set.

    Edit in DV format.

If you want to make a DVD, you have MainConcept under the hood already.

he was asking about the main concept DV codec , not the mpeg encoder - but you are right about the mpeg encoding ..

Actually, in this instance they do make a difference, because the canopus box is using the canopus codec (in hardware) to create a DV stream from an analogue source. If you were to do an editing in Vegas an output to an avi file (as a DV stream), then the Sony DVV codec would be used to create any new footage (cross fades, credit overlays etc). As you are frameserving, this may not be an issue.

thats what i said -- but since he is using sony studio , other dv codecs on his system dont mater ...

so the answer is still "NO" --- doesnt mater on the ones he asked about .

I use Canopus ADVC-100 and Sony camcorder DV input to Vegas every day, edit in Vegas 5 (or Premiere) and output DV to the camcorders or to MainConcept MPeg2 (or MPeg1) and everything just works fine.

Canopus, Sony and MainConcept play well together.
    >>add ULead's DV and MainConcept codecs to that. They all work together.

Is there some issue of compatibility between the Canopus and Sony DV codecs? I though Canopus licensed the Sony DV codec algorithm in the early days and Canopus pledges compatibility.
