  1. Have a stupid question.

Just got a rebadged NEC-3500A and flashed it to a hacked 2.18 FW. One question I had was if you're burning in Nero, should you be able to select the increased burn speeds? Or will it just burn faster?

For instance, I had a Fuji 8x DVD-R in the drive and still was only able to select up to 8X for the burn speed in Nero.

How can I achieve the higher speeds this drive is supposed to get with different FW.

  2. In both dvd decrypter and alcohol 120%, I just chose maximum as the write speed and it burned 4x rated media at 12x and 8x media at 16x automatically. I use Nero with dvd shrink but didn't check at what speed it was burning although I'd chosen maximum write speed also.

it depend who made the disc. Only discs with certain media codes can be burned at higher speeds. I think fuji discs are either made by fuji, prodisc, or Taiyo Yuden. You can use programs like dvd identifier or dvdinfopro to see who made the disc (as opposed to what brand it was sold as). There is a huge amount of info over at http://club.cdfreaks.com in the NEC subforum of DVD Recorders.

Its the firmware that dictates how fast you can burn a dvd,at cdfreaks.com you can check and see what firmwares they have that enable burning at 12x,16x on 4x and 8x dvds.

Heres a url for all the nec firmwares that are out.

  5. Thanks for all the comments. I'm using a firmware that's supposed to enable higher burning speeds. I'll have to check on the media codes.

But my real question is just whether you should see the speed as selectable in Nero? Or will you still only see 8x in the drop down list (but should select 'Maximum' to get 12x-16x)?

If the media codes and the FW enable 16x burning, will I see 16x as one of the options in something like Nero?

  6. Yes. When I burn to Fuji 8x +R or Maxell 8x -R on either my Pioneer A08 or NEC 3500 (just installed it last night, so it's the original, non-hacked firmware), Nero's options include burning at 8, 12, or 16x, with 16x being the default choice.

  7. Karate Media,

What FW version do you have on your NEC-3500A? The disks I was trying to burn were Fuji 8x DVD-Rs so I don't know if that makes a difference. The best Nero would show is the x8 they were rated to begin with. Thanks.

  8. I'm at work right now, so I don't know. I will check when I get home.

But, as I said, I just installed it last night and have not tweaked it at all -- it's an OEM NEC 3500A drive from ZipZoomFly, so it's got whatever original firmware comes with an OEM NEC drive (as oppossed to a third-party, hacked firmware).

  9. Do those fujis say made in taiwan on the label? If so they are cheaper media, but 8x on an 8x media is what you're supposed to get.

  11. You may be intersted to read a .pdf document that i downloaded from the NEC website...

It lists a lot of different media and states what maximum write speeds may be expected.

Here's the URL (i've uploaded the .pdf to my webspace)

  12. @awp: Brand name doesnt mean much in DVD media. You need to know the media id code, which id's who actually manufactured the disc itself. Fuji buys discs made from PRODISC, FUJI or TAIYO YUDEN, slaps their name on the packaging and sells them... so saying "8x FUJI" is actually saying "I got 1 of these three or more possible manufactures, and 1 is set to overspeed burn, but I dunno which I got, so tell me why it doesnt work"

Download DVD INFO PRO, and check the media code- then you'll know what you got. For future reference, on Fuji's anyway- most of the time, buy the ones that say MADE IN JAPAN on the label near the barcode. Those are usually TY media (meaning the highest possible quality). Taiyo Yuden (TY) has been making recordable media for years and they are (maybe) the undisputed leader and heavyweight in DVDR media right now.

    GOOD LUCK.

That of course is true, but you should always stay with a a few diff. "brand names" like TDK, fuji, sony and a few others.
You can get lucky and happen to buy a cheap brand that turns out to Sony media codes but thats only so-so and still a crap shoot.
