I converted a few VHS tapes to DVD-R on my Panasonic tabletop DVD recorder. It has those standard, crappy menus that the tabletops generate but the sound is in 5.1.
I'd like to rip the DVD's onto my hard drive and get rid of the menus (and create my own custom menus) while retaining the 5.1 sound. Is there a particular program that I should use to edit the files, build a new menu and keep the 5.1 sound? Thanks!

  2. If all you are doing is making menu's then you wont need to touch the Movie/5.1 file.
Do you have software to make DVD menus, if not you may want to try the ulead site they have some great software. www.ulead.com.

Womble mpeg video wizard will edit your material and output as mpeg, you can then author (make menu's etc.) with another program.

TMPGEnc DVD Author can do basic editting (cut and splice) then author and burn all in one.

edit: Video wizard won't keep the 5.1, TDA will.

Not for ripping. It will edit the VRO's and VOB's from DVD recorder disks. It allows you to do nice transitions and add titles and other audio. No need to rip, just copy.

  6. I hear ya. but i thought he just wanted to make menu's...am i reading wrong?
If he just copys then he will have vob and ifo ect files. Then he will need to know how to get the mpeg2 out of them when he can just rip with DVD Decrypter to mpeg2 and 5.1 files. i think it would be faster and less confusion.

Editing DVD made with DVD tabletop recorder in 5.1 sound
Not sure of wmalex59's full intent, but that was the title of the post.

You have a great suggestion too, though.

Thanks guys. I will probably convert the files to mpeg2. I have cut out some of the unwanted "junk" using TMPGEnc but I'd like to add chapters and nicer menus (than what TMPGEnc has). I'll take a look at some of the suggestions above.

  10. Uh, wmalex59, a Panasonic tabletop dvd recorder can't record in 5.1, regardless of the source. The best you can get is 2-channel Dolby Digital.

  11. brownstem is correct. Not only that but the VHS spec does not support anything
but prologic and most VHS sets can't even output that.

I do this almost every day. Please read the following:

The sound you are recording on your DVR is 2 channel Dolby AC3, not Dolby 5.1

Use DVD Decrypter to rip your DVDs to your hard drive. You can rip them as multiple VOBs or one VOB (depending upon the options you select). You can also use Decrypter to demux the DVD VOB to seperate audio & video streams if you like. If necessary, use TMPGEnc to mux the seperate files back to a standard MPEG2 file - it all depends on the requirements of your Authoring software.

If you want to do any editing (transitions and such) use MPEG VIDEO WIZARD, as ZippyP suggests. This is one of the few MPEG editors that works well.

    Good Luck!
