I recently bought a Toshiba dvr620ku to record VHS tapes onto DVDs and I can not successfully rip the dvds.

The tapes are not copyright protected (old home videos and such) and record onto the dvd just fine. I'm using DVD-R. The dvd plays on my dvd player and on my laptop using VLC.

When I attempt to rip the dvd, on Ubuntu using Brasero to create a .iso, the process takes 15 seconds instead of the usual 20 minutes. Then I get this message when I try to run the file: "Playback failure: VLC cannot set the DVD's title. It possibly cannot decrypt the entire disk."

Any suggestions? Is there a problem with the recording process, or do I simply need to change formatting somehow?

Does the DVD play on your Toshiba recorder? If so, then it might not be finalized. If it doesn't, you may not have the correct disk, or the original recording failed.

unencrypted DVD's don't need to be "ripped"..just copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to the computer.

Thanks greymalkin, it worked! Now I have a followup question:
The Video_TS folder contains multiple .vob files, each a different section of the dvd, and none more than 1024 MB. Is that normal? I'm wondering how I can watch the entire movie without having to open a new file several times in the middle, and also how I can burn a new dvd out of them.

they are not chapters..It's just how the .VOB files get broken up.

    1) Playing Back: Any dvd playing software will understand how to play the DVD files. For instance you could use Media Player Classic..use File - Open DVD and point to the VIDEO_TS Folder. it will know what to do.

    2) Burning: Any software that can burn DVD's (like Nero) can do this for you. Just say you're creating DVD Video and it will build the VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folders (Not used in video DVD's). Then you just drag the files from your VIDEO_TS folder into the project and burn.

This may be an option for you, dvduser

I record Non-CP VHS tapes along with , shows and movies (from Satellite) to my Liteon DVD recorder on DVD+rw's and use DVD Decrypter to rip to Hd, DVD Shrink to re-author (shrink shows to get two or more episodes toa disk), Avidmux to edit commercials, VOB2MPG to convert to MPEg files and DVD Styler to make a DVD with custom menus and convert to an .iso which I will burn to DVD-R with Roxio.

I find that using DVD Decrypter is quicker than just copying the Video_ts folder and if I use ripit4me it helps clean up any problems that may be there in the recording.
