  1. OK, I bought a Philips DVP642 and I've run into a very strange problem.

While testing it's playback of the different video formats, I started watching a DivX copy of "There's Something About Mary". After 20 minutes into the movie, the player froze. The only thing I could do was shut it off.

I turned it back on and the player said No disc, so I tried a DVD, no disc. Tried some other videos I have, all of them say no disc.

    Everything says no disc now.
So, then decided to try and upgrade the firmwire, but it won't even read the firmwire disc, it still says "No disc".

  4. Can you get into the menu/Setup?

  5. Yes, why?
If you're suggesting to try and reset the settings back to factory default settings, I've also already tried that.

  8. BTW, anyone know approximately how long it would take to get a replacement from Philips?

  9. Maybe the lens is dirty? I had a cd player that behaved the same way but after I cleaned the lens, it was fine.

A similar thing happened with my ancient Toshiba 2150, on New Year's Eve of course. After freezing, it couldn't load any discs (it was locked in the loading cycle). After removing both discs (it is a 2 disc model), a third disc finally worked. Sometimes, a problem like this will mysteriously resolve itself.

Yes, but if I open it up, it will void the warranty, no?

I bought it on 12/26/04 from an online store called "Bert's Best" and they sell their merchandise on eBay, which is where I got it.

They seemed very reliable with a very positive feedback score and lots of customers.

    Probably
If it's till within the warranty period, I wouldn't try it.
