just formatted computer and reinstalled premiere to find now that when i capture audio within premiere and drag it on timeline there is no audio?
when i play the captured video through something like windows media player the audio works fine, i have looked at the settings within premiere but cant find anything.
any ideas?

I have experienced this same problems and here is what worked for me.
Go to Project>Project Settings>General>Playback Settings and check "playback on desktop only"
For me, when "playback on DV Hardware and Desktop" was checked, it acted as you described.
That may not be your issue, but it worked for me.
