  1. for some reason i've seem to have lost a codec. ive been viewing a lot of media files on the internet and they play as a black screen. my problem is i don't know what codec they are using that i need to reinstall. is there a program or something i can use to see what codec these videos have been encoded with to find out?

If it's streaming media it may mean that you need to upgrade the browser's player plugins.

If your talking about something else then fake files are common. Uncompressed black screens.
If you have an actual file use GSPOT to check the codec.
