Whenever people complain about living in Jacksonville, I tell them it could be worse - they could be living in Detroit!
-
They ought to suspend all of the participants for one year. ********

But seriously. I think pro players should leave the ass whoopings to the trained professionals, security guands and off-duty police officers.Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -

I also think that suspending them indefinitely before they "complete the investigation" is going to be a big problem with the Players' Union. Either way, the Pacers top 3 scorers are now suspended indefinitely. Guess that leaves the one of the top 3 seeds in the East open for someone to squeeze on into. Let's go Knicks!

I would not be nearly as concerned with criminal action as I would civil suits.
-
Either way (I may be playing devil's advocate, but..) what makes the fans involved any less culpable to a civil suit than the players? Being 6'7" 240 doesn't give someone any more of a right to throw things at you and punch you in the back of the head than being 5'8" 140 does.

I'm certainly not condoning what happened and there is fault on both sides.
It is my understanding that during this mele, innocent fans were struck -- 1 by Artest as he made his way up to the person who ultimately struck him with their frosty brew. The report I heard was said that as Aretest was striking one man, he was asking him if he was the one who threw the beer!! (I would think you should make SURE before punching the person, but hey) After the innocent man repeatedly denied it was him, Artest then moved up the stands to the actual "perpetrator" and proceeded to dole out vigilante justice.
Not too smart !!
The Lesson -- never mess with Basketball Playin' Gangsta Rapper !!! Oh and wait to exact your vengence in a not so public place especially when there are national network cameras present. -
Oh, absolutely, but once Artest was in the stands, he was pretty much being attacked and pelted at every angle. If Stephen Jackson, Fred Jones, Rasheed Wallace, etc, didn't go up there, Artest would probably have been in big trouble. The way I saw it (live), I think Artest did get the wrong fan first, but he wasn't really "striking" him. He sort of grabbed him and was yelling at him.
At the end of the day, only one person was hospitalized, with about 5 others treated for minor injuries. I'm willing to bet that most of the injuries were caused by idiotic fans throwing chairs into groups of people.
Let me just clarify, Artest should NOT have gone into the stands. Forget about the fact that there's supposed to be a rule the players abide by. He shouldn't have gone in, because he had no idea who he the culprit was, and innocent people were bound to get caught in the middle. However, if someone threw a full cup of beer at my nose, I don't think I'd be thinking 100% rationally either -

That's a pretty low-resolution and not full screen version of it, but you'll get an idea. The ESPN videos showed a lot more. -
I am guessing that Artest, O'Neal, and Jackson will get 10-15 games each. Not sure what Wallace will get but he should get less (maybe 5 games). I think O'Neals punch was by far, the worst of all.

The NBA has taken the following actions, effective immediately:
1. Indiana players Ron Artest, Stephen Jackson and Jermaine O’Neal are suspended indefinitely, the length to be determined upon completion of the investigation.
2. Detroit player Ben Wallace is suspended indefinitely, the length to be determined upon completion of the investigation.
3. Review of rules and procedures relating to altercations and security have been undertaken so that fans can continue to attend our games unthreatened by events such as the ones that occurred last night.” -

Hell thats assult, just because they did it to a player and not a cop or a judge dont mean it can be dismissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the p2p users in town, there's a clip from ESPN titled

floating around showing the O'Neal punch and a few other highlights of the action. -
Couple of injuries a few suspensions. The soccer fans and players still smirking: "That's all you did? We kill. Come to us you have something."
