I know what he is doing, I want to know what that fan is doing with his/her hand coming out of his ass. Its just a funny picture. I think its actually two different fans, it just looks like the hand is coming from the one reaching in on the right.

I think the term fan comes from fanatic, so I'd say its pretty applicable.

The term "fan" actually comes from fancier, someone who likes or fancies something. Fanatic was just a way of corupting something simple into something controversial, as the media likes to do.

I thought it came from fanatic As in the "Phillies Fanatic" mascot

It depends on who you ask. Some say it came from the word fancy which described boxing fans during the early years of the sport. The Oxford English Dictionary, however, states that fan is short for fanatic...so I'm going with that one.

I go with what the majority feels a bout the word. Ask someone if they were a fan of a sport. Then ask them if they are fanatic about it.

Reminds me of the time Eric Cantona went flying into the crowd, Bruce Lee style, at Selhurst Park after being racially abused by a crowd member. He got a nine month ban and was fined £20,000.

EDIT - Turns out I read it too fast. The arbitration awarded the reduction but it still has to be approved by the NBA.
