The best way to put subtitle on a .mpg (mpeg2) video

So what i am doing is this:

I extract .mpg from .bin/cue
Then i open virtualdubmod, and open the .mpg, and load subtitle filter
Then i encode it to .avi, using divx on 1280x720 res with 30fps and 8000bitrate.

Then i open the .avi in tmpgenc xpress 3, and encode it to svcd again.

So i am encoding 2 times the video, and that is not good, im sure i am loosing quality by doing that.

But thats the only way i can put subtitles on my .mpg files.

If i try to open the .mpg file direct in tmpgenc, it will load just fine.
But the subtitles wont load on the preview, and i have even tryed to encode a few minutes to see if the subtitles would be there in the output .mpg, but they werent.

I feel that it is possible, to open the .mpg directly into tmpgenc xpress 3, and make it show the subtitles too. I have already made "directshow multimedia file reader" priority to max in VFAPI priority order in tmpgenc xpress 3.

I have ffdshow installed for subtitles, and it works great with virtualdubmod.
But it wont work with tmpgenc xpress 3.

Then i installed vobsub, and now, some times some subtitles load in tmpgenc xpress 3. but they are completly out of sync.

But since sometimes (dunno why isnt this all the time) i can see the subtitles in tmpgenc xpress 3 preview with directshow from vobsub, i think it is possible to only encode the .mpg once, and have the final .mpg with the permanent subtitles.

So, this is my problem. When i need to put subtitles on .mpg, i am making .mpg to .avi, and then .avi to .mpg again. I encode it 2 times.

So, does anyone know, how to put subtitles on a .mpg with a better way?

PS: I cant open the .mpg in virtualdubmod, and then load subtitle filter, and then frameserve it to tmpgenc. When i do that, tmpgenc wont encode, and it gives me a error like this "not a suported file".

So, who knows how to do it?

Well, I must say I had that question too, i.e. how to do exactly what you're asking, but I searched here in videohelp in the forums and in the FAQ's and I solved the problem. This site is awesome!! But now that I know I can answer your question.
Well, first of all I have VobSub and I like it pretty much, i never tried ffdshow, so all my results were based in VobSub. Anyway..you're right..you're encoding two times and that's completely unnecessary. If you have a video file and you want to put subtitles on it, you have two ways of doing it (that I know).

1st WAY - You can do it with TMPGEnc putting the "directshow multimedia file reader" in maximum priority and letting VobSub load subtitles automaticaly. When you load the video file in TMPGEnc, VobSub will load the subtitle and you can encode it normally! But there's one BIG note: If it's a .mpg file you're loading in TMPGEnc, like in your case, VobSub won't load the subtitle and that's why you can't see the subtitles in TMPGEnc. So you need to use the other way that works for any video file!That's the 2nd way

2nd WAY - You need to frameserv using VirtualDubMod! I suggest you following this two guides on how to do that:

You said it gave you an error while frameserving. I think that's because you probably didn't installed handler in VirtualDubMod, or you when giving a name to your "fake" avi file in VirtualDubMod, you didn't named it like this, for example: file.vdr.avi

Try this and I suggest reading those two guides...

I managed to do it, but with tmpgenc 2.5 version.
I just tryed it now, and it worked! I was able to frameserve the .mpg with the subtitle filter to tmpgenc 2.5 and encode it again.

But i still cant make it with tmpgenc xpress 3. When i hit "encode" i get the "file not suported" error.

So, tell me, can u make it with tmpgenc xpress 3? or just 2.5 too?

Well, I'm seeing then that the problem wasn't you not knowing what to do, but instead, the problem is TMPGEnc Xpress itself!
I must say that I never tried TMPGEnc Xpress, because I'm fully satisfied with the "normal" TMPGEnc. I've read already somewhere that TMPGEnc Xpress doesn't bring any advantages, it just intends to be more user-friendly and putting apart those options they consider less important! I think it just has one small advantage: it seems that can convert .mov files to .mpg, but you can do that too adding this plugin/file to TMPGenc directory:
