Thanks for the suggestions, I will have a play around.
I understood that hitting next step would move you to the next chapter - but I will see if that works if the pause is on.You can advance each frame
in PowerDVD by hitting next step!!! Yippeeee!
I use a Canopus ADVC-50 and have not yet managed to get VirtualDub to open any of my AVI files recorded with this (even by downloading the codecs). I may give this a go with the encoded DVD MPEG and report back.VirtualDubMOD will do it....

You can definitely just open the vobs straight off of DVD with virtualdubmod, although it's faster if you have ripped the dvd to your harddrive.

It is a DVD-R that I have created, that I am after getting a screen cap from, if it makes any difference.
