Recording From VCR to DV

I have some old movies I made and some home movies that were shot on VHS. How can I capture this footage onto my DV? If it helps my DV camera is a JVC GR-DVL510.

What do have on your computer? Can your camera transfer via fire wire and does your computer have a fire wire port? Fill out your computer details as well.

Unless you camcorder has line-in recording, you will need to capture the analog VHS footage to your computer via analog capture. I am not that familiar with your cam, but think that only Sony has many units that offer line-in, or better yet, pass-through. With the pass-through on my old Sony D8, I can run the VHS through the line-in, hookup firewire to the computer and capture just as if it were already in DV. If you wanted this on DV tape, you would have to output back to the unit.

Correct, I'm trying to figure out how to copy something from my VCR to my DV camera. I don't know what else I could tell you. The VCR has AV and coaxil out puts. What do you need to know?

OK, good. It was just the way the original question was worded that wasn't exactly crystal clear on what you wanted to do, that's all. Not to worry !

Because I don't know exactly how to do it, I'm gonna have to say RTFM on this one. Look for a section on analog input. If your camera can do it, I'm sure it will be in the manual.

It is packed with multimedia interfaces including SD/MMC compatibility, USB, S-video and A/V output terminals, and DV input/output.

I don't see anything there for analog input, only DV, so you might need to plug your VCR into an Analog-> Digital converter (such as a Canopus ADVC-100 or similar) and then plug its output into the DV input to do it.

The only two that I can see are AV outputs on the VCR and the DV. Is there a way to change the AV out on the DV camera to an input? Is there a setting I can change?

Find the manual and read throught it just for fun. I did a half assed search for the tech specs and came up dry after three quick peeks. It looks like it should be a modern enough cam to do what you want. Look around your cam and identify all of the ports and learn what they do. I am guessing that you will have some sort of analog connector on it somewhere. There may be a S-video jack and there may be a little hole that says Audio/video (this is the one that I would use) The cable for it should have three RCA plugs at one end (red,white and yellow) and the other end should be about 1/8 in dia and look like it has a few rings around near the end. Hook the part that fits the VCR to the VCR and the other end to the cam. (by the way if you are useing this to veiw from the cam to the TV then it is more than likley that this the same setup for recording to and from the VCR) The same port works both ways on every cam that I know about, but I could be wrong

My 2 and a bit year old Panasonic Mini-DV cam has both DV and analogue (RCA and S-Video) input and pass through. What Zapper has decsribed is pretty much how minie works, so if you have this, you should be OK.

Nope. The features at the JVC site says it has fire wire in/out, A/V out.
