    The record/play heads.

There are either two or four and the reside on a small cylindrical wheel that is mounted on an angle. As opposed to an audio tape "track" that is a straight line, the video tape is recorded in short diagonal tracks from bottom to top. That way they can get more use of the tape real estate and keep the tape length to a minimum.

    This isn't rocket science.

    And your welcome.

The actual recording occurs when the recording head comes in contact (in a helical scan fashion) with the magnetic tape. The changing electric field fed to the recording head (the changes correspond to video information) produces a corresponding magnetic field (which also changes). This field, in turn, causes the iron oxide particles that make up the recording tape to align in such a way that their pattern matches the field produced by the head.
