I tired to connect my Sony digital8 (DCR-TVR520) camcorder’s iLink port to the RDR VX500 iLink port using a firewire cable. The video images and audio are displayed, but when I try to do a DV dub, I get an error message that says the cable is not connected???? However, it is connected and playing the video I want to record. This option was why I went with the Sony product (to match it with my camcorder).

I tried using Sony’s live chat and found the service entirely unsatisfactory - not only were there long delays in communication, but the analyst completely missed the point - in fact it was suggested that I should use the analog cables instead of the iLink!! Their email support was just as bad - in fact the first response gave me the directions for dubbing DVD to VHS.

Has anyone else had a simialr problem - and if so, was there a work-around or solution?

Update: After trying a few more things, I found that if I first used the record button on the VX-500, then the iLink will work. I have no idea why it needed that jump start. but it appears to work as it should....

However, now when I record in the DV Edit mode it keeps having audio drop outs (for 5 to 10 sec) and the video is affected as well (as if there is a buffer issue.

Has anyone else experienced any problems with the iLink and this unit - or do I have a problem recorder???

  3. I did test out a VX500 with my TRV27. It worked very well and had no problems with Ilink what so ever.. I did take the VX500 back only because I decided I wanted a model with a hard drive. I ended up with the HX900 and like it very much. It is not perfect but I really do think it works well.
