I have a Sony HDR-HC3 and am trying to capture HDV using Vegas 9. I can control the camera through the iLink cable, but nothing shows on the computer during capture. The capture clip file does not get created. On the camera's screen I noticed it says "HDVin" next to the iLink icon. I think this needs to be changes to "HDVout" but I can't find how to do that. Any thoughts on this???

Are you sure you have the camcorder menus set to HDV out? (check instruction manual)
This camcorder will also convert HDV to DV on the fly or record DV and export DV. All this is set in the menus.
If you suspect the computer is at fault, try capturing with HDVSplit on another IEEE-1394 equipped computer.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I have the hc5 and to transfer hdv to the pc I have to move the power switch until "PLAY/EDIT" shows on the screen. Pressing menu in this mode will show "edit/play" submenu". Scrolling down this submenu is a "STANDARD SET" Menu. Inside this is the choice of selecting "Auto, HDV or DV" for playback or transfer. Choose HDV. Hope this help.

Tony,
I have a HDV-Z5U (One of sony's latest Pro HD camera). I have "Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate" software and I faced similar issues as the one you are perhaps experiencing. Even though the camera is playing and there is picture in the camera's view finder, there is no picture in the capture screen. From the capture screen controls the camera can be controller - Play, stop, rewind, play again etc. The Camera listens fine and does respond to those commands, but still there is no picture in the capture screen. I found a workaround that worked for me..
Get out of capture mode or the capture screen whichever applies to your Vegas 9 software.
Connect the camera and put it to play. while the camera is playing, start the Capture software. Then if your conditions are the same as mine, you will see the picture on the capture screen. Now you press the Start Capture button to catch it in a file. Make sure you stop capture, which will close the file properly before going to the edit mode and viewing the captured file. There is one disadvantage to this workaround; you loose the first 20 or 30 secs of the Video footage as you have set it to play before starting the capture software/screen. For this I had been hollering at Pinnacle to fix their bug with the HDV capture. The DV capture works fine as advertise.
Hope this helps. please let me know. My phone:602-793-5942.Tarique -
A HDV-Z5U Pro HD camera with an entry level editor?
Anyway, I saw a HC3 on craig's list for $200

Sometimes, I envision the user looking thru their new $5000 camera the wrong way and saying, "Hey! How come I can't see anything?" -
Yea, Yea Yea! I am humbled by my $89 editor to use with the HDV-Z5U. The truth is i used to use that software previously with my little Canon DV and got comfortable with it. Plus, I invested in lot of other titles, menus, so the total investment was close to a Vegas 9. I will eventually buy a real editor. So you are right in chuckling with my situation!
Thanks for your sense of humor!
Do you think Vegas 9 will solve my capture problem?Tarique -
use hdvsplit to capture HDV. it's free and easy to use. it's designed to do just one job and does it well. the only quirk is a design of HDV, in that some cams don't record on a tiny first bit of tape and the program may stop like there is nothing on the tape. pressing record a second time after it stops will start the actual capture though.
