Just in case you were wondering how I've managed to spend so much time on the forums over the past few days, I'm currently at home, sick, with a tooth abcess. My face is swollen up and hurts like all hell, but I'm still able to do basic things around the house, like browse forums, etc etc

I'm due to get my tooth pulled on Thursday, which means I'll be (hyper)active on the forums for the next couple of days at least.
    If in doubt, Google it.

How do you get doctors to prescribe those types of medicines? I was in a car accident that knocked out two teeth, broke my leg, and left my bottom lip into two and all they gave me was Tylenol.

You just need the right pharmacist :

    http://www.helpstopfraud.org/fraudreport/360.html

The thing to note about this guy is he was one of the largest purchasers of oxycotin in Pennsylvania yet his pharmacy was located in a rural area with the largest population center of about 5,000 people about 2 miles away. How he expected to not get caught is beyond me. I'm not sure why this story didn't make national headlines, it has it all.... murder (about 5 to 7), buried bodies, missing people, the accused murderer escaped from the jail at one point (keystone cops), fraud, you name it.

(Thank God, but no religion ... yada yada yada ... you get the drill ... )

I thought this thread had already gone the way of so many before it and been mercilessly threadjacked

I'll be feeling much better in about 41 hours (5PM Thursday) when that little bastard of a tooth gets pulled. I'll be feeling better until the local wears off, then I'll feel like shit until I get into the painkillers, then I won't be able to talk much and have to eat food through a straw for a couple of days. By Monday I should be back to normal

But then I'll have to go back to work, so no more post-whoring for me ( ... or just not as frequently, anyways )
    If in doubt, Google it.

A year passed last week since I had my wisdom teeth out, at the tender age of 25. Most people I know had them out way before then, if they had them out at all.

    Yep

I think it was about four years ago when they were pulled.

That would mean I was 27.

Did you get them out in the chair, or "go under" ?

At the time, I had to go to a dental college, and they numbed the gums and they said I would only feel pressure.

    It hurt like hell.

From that point on, I ask them to put me under when I go to the dentist.

I went under for my wisdom teeth, but given that wonderful thing we call hindsight, I would've got them out in the chair if I had my time again.

The theory goes something like this:

If you go under, you cannot see what they're doing. Rumour has it that the excess bruising around the cheekbones can often be caused by the sandshoes the dentist is wearing, in order to get greater leverage. If you get it done in the chair, they have to be gentler because you can see exactly what they're doing.

The other issue is the pain factor. While a local wearing off causes some pain, I can guarantee you that inhaling a gas, and then waking up a couple of hours later with incredible pain (so going from nothing to plenty, or so it appears to you, anyway) is much worse IMO. As soon as I "came to", a nurse was there to add a bit of pethedine into my drip, but apparently they can only add so much every 5 minutes, up to a daily maximum. They told me it was 5ml every 5 minutes, up to 100ml for the day. It took 90mls (and an hour and a half) before I was on easy street. Then they make you eat jelly and ice-cream, and you can't go home until you do. Within 24 hours the pethedine wears off, and no amount of prescription tablets can ease the pain, plus you're eating practically through a straw for a couple of days, and have cheeks the size of oranges.

I don't mean to put anyone off getting their wisdom teeth out, mind you

Maybe I just had a bad experience.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  18. Don't know about general dentists, but if you go to theatre to get your Wisdom teeth taken out by a faciomaxillary surgeon, the procedure is relatively gentle. Basically, the surgeon drills a hole into the tooth and then puts in a metal... um "probe" (I suppose) and using a levering action, snaps the tooth in half (in a top-bottom axis). The two halves of the tooth comes out easily with pliers.

    Regards.

Kick back in the chair and take a few belts off a bottle of whiskey and take it like a manly-man. Let the Doc do his bit with the pliers and picks and then walk that shit the **** off.

    Or not.

Screaming like a bitch and begging for the gas works, too

Working. Needless to say, there are doctors on duty at night in hospitals. I'm working the night shift (10:30PM to 8:00AM) for a week.

I had my wisdom teeth all pulled between the ages of 26 and 27. Two of them had hooked roots and required the dentist grind a slot in them, then use a flat-blade-screwdriver-looking thing to crack the teeth into two halves, then extract each half. I was awake with novocaine for all the extractions.

Once you've gone through 3 or 4 root-canals, extractions won't worry you much

Why I had my lip stitched up twice with no novacaine. And I was jitterbugging by that evening.

I had 11 teeth pulled at one time(two day hospital visit). It was a hospital record at the time....not sure about today.
Anyway....11 pulled....walked out missing 3 of my adult teeth. My baby teeth WOULD NOT let go of the ghost. Some of the baby teeth ruined my adult teeth which left me with 3 missing.
Years later I went and had every tooth on the top of my mouth capped (two bridges actually) and my front four teeth laminated...the dentist called them Lee Press-on Teeth........that crap movie stars get. Looks VERY nice but the laminates are a bit fragile. No more candy apples for me I'm afraid but hey....it looks more civilized eating with a knife and fork anyway...
Would I get laminates again....NO....I'd go with a full upper dental implant or full upper bridge. For those of you who have bridges and know how to take care of them....using OralB Superfloss is an eye-opening experience isn't it?.....

Superfloss sucks. I use regular floss with a threader.

I still have some Tylenol W/Codene. I had an infection on my arm from a bad cut I got working on my car. 2 days layer my elbow felt like it was on fire and swollen so much I couldn't bend my arm. Doctor made a cut on it and the smelly puss came out and I had to take antibiotics for it. Doctor told me I was lucky it didn't turn out gangrenous. But I got a lot of Tylenol w/codene for it.
