OK, I'm tired of getting SPAM and viruses through IE and Outlook express. I got 3 trojans in 1 hour through Internet Explorer so I'm through with that.so... now I'm looking for alternatives to both.
I've already started using Firefox 1.0 but when I was looking at the Mozilla Thunderbird version it said there were some "bugs" in the forums. Does anyone else use Thunderbird? Any problems with it?
Thanks

How about a good firewall and antivirus program.
The firewall must be managed properly and the antivirus must be updated
I have been on broadband going on 5 years. The only time I got infected was this year when i got my new computer and I connected to the net to get a video driver. I didn't have my firewall or AV up yet. I got three trojans that where key logging and streaming out
. I didn't know this untill I loadup up my firewall and saw strange programs sending out
I promply scraped the two of of work loading up the OS and formated the hard drive. The reinstalled the OS with new admin password!
Good luck,

Yes but for a home user keeping your OS and AV updated and being smart about where you surf and what programs you install will protect you 99% of the time. That 1% is probably smaller since it constitutes someone actually targeting your computer which doesn't happen very often at all.
Update to SP2 if you want to continue using IE and Outlook as the built-in security measures will help a little. Otherwise use a Mozilla-based browser like almost everyone recommends for both your surfing and your email. You'll still end up pulling out IE for some websites but at least then you know something about the site you're visiting if you've already attempted to open it with Mozilla.FB-DIMM are the real cause of global warming -
The solution I use that seems to work pretty well is this: AVG Anti-Virus (free), automatically updates definitions and scans entire system every morning at 2 am as well as constant scans of email and downloads, Opera web browser (can be free, but I paid to get rid of the small ad in the toolbar) to avoid the pitfalls of IE, and Eudora email client (free for similar functionality to Outlook Express, with option to pay for more features) to avoid OE. As far as the firewall goes, there's one built into my hardware router that does a fine job.

I can't remember the last time I got a virus/worm/trojan
I only use IE and OE, and I;m behind a firewall running one of the oldest McAfee scan engines -

Lucky I guess -
I only got the trojans from one particular site.
I have a linksys router with the firewall setup correctly and I don't look for crackz and bootleg software (anymore). I actually pay for everything now. Mainly becuase to get crackz you get viruses and more spyware than any one person needs. I also used the google toolbar (which doesn't work in Firefox) and if the site didn't have relativley high page rank I didn't download from them. The popups that say "Trust us/Click Yes we promise to screw up your computer" to continue... I never do that.
I was just trying to see what the options were. I know IE is pretty much crap as far as security goes. That's what prompted me to try Mozilla -
I am sure everyone has tried the Shields Up test from http://grc.com/default.htm
And I am sure everyone got the following:
Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.
Granted if I download some file from some unkown site and that file has a trojon/virus... then I pray like hell my NAV 9.0 Corp catches it. Moral of the story .... screw that, I am not Montel.
