  1. I'm working on a DVD video for my kids basketball team which will contain some vidoe from my mini DV Sony Camcorder and some pictures from my digital camera (slide show type thing). along with a music audio track. Can I use TMPGenc to encode after editing? Would I save the edited video as a AVI file?

Is there anything special I should know about combining DV with digital photos? So far I have only done DV transfer-edit-encode-author-burn. Is it any different when I ad the photos?

    Thanks.

    Hi tmh,

If you're combining the DV footage and the stills (the JPGs) in an editor, save as DV AVI and then you can encode to MPEG with TMPGEnc - I do this all the time.

If you're doing the DV only in the editor, encode as normal. Then, for the JPGs, you could use something like Slide Show Maker to create a nice slideshow of your photos and save as AVI then encode that as normal.

No. And, no different when you add in the photos.

The only thing with adding stills is to make sure that the original JPG is at least 720 x 480 / 576 (NTSC / PAL) as, if they're smaller, they'll be enlarged and won't look as good.

    Good luck.

  3. Thanks daamon. That makes it simple.

btw, I pretty much followed your response to my first post about DV to DVD process and I got things working pretty well - actually very well. I haven't done anything fancy yet, just some clipping of my camcorder DVs in VirtualDub and encoding then authoring for DVD. Hard to believe, but the first one I completed played just fine in a DVD player.

Now I'm trying some more creative "stuff", maybe some transitions, stills, etc.

Thanks for all the help! I now have something to do while I goof off during work time and instead of hanging around with my wife.

    Hi tmh.

Glad to be of help - on this and the other (monster sized) thread.

It's encouraging to get such feedback - enough to inspire me to write a generic guide on the whole process from picking up a camera to taking an authored DVD out of the DVD writer.

I'm especially pleased that you got (very good) results at your first attempt - it means it's a combination of the info being relevant and clear, and you having the aptitude for the dark arts...

As for transitions - that's (usually) pretty straight forward in most editing apps. You're only limited by your imagination and what's available.

    P.S. Check your PMs...

Usually photos will flicker if encoded interlaced like the video. The cure is to encode the photos progressive.
