  1. Hi,
if i open some *.avi or *.mpg files, all running applications close themselves. The Windows Shortcut Bar dissapears and after 10 seconds it comes back. What's the deal about that?

Yeah, you can download Codec Sniper. I think you can find it on the 'Tools' section.

Your problem is pretty simple. You dont have enough physical memory..basically all your mem and swap file (virtual memory) are used up and EXPLORER.EXE has no option other than to close and restart to clear the mem.

You can watch your memory usage (XP Pro) by <CAD>Task Manager> PERFORMANCE tab> Physical Mem and Kernel Mem.

Playing AVi's shouldn't use up your mem so look in the PROCESSES tab and look at the CPU & Mem Usage columns (but ONLY the ones that are actually moving). STOP anything that is hogging your resources.

If your using WMP (hahahaha.. STOP using it NOW!!!!) you will find that something like BSplayer or Zoomplayer will only use a FRACTION of the avialble CPU/mem to run the same avi.

What you REALLY REALLY need to do is CONFIGURE your system and DISABLE all un-needed services....which should be the first thing anyone does with a Windows based OS. Try Black Viper for guides.

Monzie, I need to view my memory usage same as Muffin, although for a different reason. My comp freezes and errors frequently and I want to see what's what. Can you give those instructions for windows 98 please?

Same command for task manager in 98: Control-Alt-Delete

It don't believe you can view your memory usage, however.

Isn't the dos window materialized by chanting "command" rather than "cmd" in W98 (and other non NT based MS OS)?

This discussion went way beyond the subject. I have the same problem with the author of the original message though BUT havent found a solution yet.
If this info helps for a better answer I have to add that These files that acting strabge canot even be browsed some times. For example I do have some files that when trying to play, they act like virouses, explorer shuts down and restarts etc.
Now if I right click on the file to see its properties same thing happens. Then if I try to encode them, my encoders freeze or they dont see the file saying "There is Not Video Data for this file".

Any suggestions? Is the problem more clear now maybe?
