  1. Hi there, I am editing with Final Cut Pro in PAL, then I try to burn a DVD with either toast or IDVD. I tell both programms that this is PAL, yet my DVDs stutter like a real bad NTSC to PAL conversion, it looks as bas as a stutterframe. I have an external DVD burner. On the computer these DVDs play fine and smooth. Does anybody know what the problem is and what I could do differently? I would be very, very thankful, because this is a sad mess. Thanks Marianne

    That's absolutely HORRIBLE advice on that article.
    Never de-interlace.

    You know, I bet the original post has interlace REVERSED. Could be.
    Again, need more details.

  7. Okay: I shoot in mini DV PAL, I capture in DV PAL 48kHZ (but I have tried other options as well) Then I make a quicktime movie which I then burn on a DVD with an external DVD burner OWC Mercury Pro CD-RW& DVD-RW. I used toast as well as iDVD, telling both programs that it is PAL. Is this everything?

  8. and about the interlacing: I don't have stripes or anything. I have a cristal clear picture, it just looks like a stutter frame, like there are frames missing. When the camera moves, or when text moves into the picture, it stutters. Thanks Marianne

    I just read the first post again. On the computer they play fine but on the DVD player they stutter. It sounds like a problem the DVD player is having with the media. Try a different brand of media.

  10. as I already said, I used all kinds of media and different DVD players. It stutters, no matter what brand of media or DVD player.

    You sound like you're not convinced that the encoding was done in PAL. Have you tried opening one of the VOBs from the DVD in MPEG Streamclip or ffmpegX and see what it lists as framerate? You could try encoding with ffmpegX and see what happens... Or, what about encoding with compressor? Do you have compressor?

  12. Guys! I capture in PAL, quicktime is automatically PAL etc... I tell Toast/iDVD I want PAL and I always check that I have 25 frames, which is PAL! All the other stuff does not apply to me since I think you are writing about iDVDpro, which I do not have. All this suff you are writing about is done automatically. I am sorry, but I think even you cannot help. Marianne

    Well, sometimes things are automatically done wrong It's just that most people are not having this problem. I found two threads that sound like yours;

    I think we offered the same advice. The only other advice I can give is to make sure all your programs are up to date. Definitely try different methods, try Capturing with iMovie instead of FCP. Try Encoding with something different than iDVD or Toast. Try burning with a different burner. Since very few people are having this problem, it seems to be localized

    Instead of outputting to DVD, put it back onto a tape and play onto your TV. Is it stuttering?

    Yea, I think she's going to find that the problem is with the output from FCP. I played around a little while with FCP 4.5 and Toast 6.07. It wasn't pretty. In fact, with the standard settings of Export to QT Movie 'DV PAL 48 kHz' run through Toast, it didn't want to play at all on my PAL/NTSC all-in-one TV. It was like slow motion, then freeze. The DVD-RW played fine on my Mac. The Files played fine on my Mac. Then I took the elementary streams from the Roxio temp folder to ffmpegX, Muxed as DVD, ran that MPEG through Toast and it worked fine on the TV. Don't ask me.

    The best results were by exporting 'using compressor', setup the MPEG2 60min Fast Encode for PAL, with M1A audio, one pass VBR. Then throw the M2V and M1A into the Toast Video Tab. That Looked/Played great on the TV.

    I don't even want to try my iDVD3. Haven't used it yet, and I don't intend to :P
