just curious, and not sure where to post...

I'm trying to find out if there's any player that are hackable so that you could have a custom text or logo displayed while the player is idle.

for example, the Apex 1010 I have, after waiting on a menu or a paused video for a while, goes to a screensaver of the Apex logo bouncing around the screen.

are there any players that can be hacked to insert a custom text to bounce around? prefereably cheap ones?

    any info / links appreciated.

I just saw a post about this in the last week or so. I'll do some digging.

  3. The screen dump is in the firmware. In many
cases the firmware is flashable so the answer
    is yes but

    1) You may need to befriend someone with a eprom burner
(if you don't have a unit that has a Flash Rom)

    2) You will need the orig. code

The early Apex's were so popular, some ppl wrote
screen dumping software for them. The AD100A comes to mind

offline - aren't some of them reflashable by copying the new firmware to CD, then starting the unit with the CD in place? I know I have seen a procedure for this somewhere. I don't think all units are that way, but some are.
Yep. I have two just like that. Not all players have FlashRoms however.
I had a type of Apex that had a eprom.
I got the code from china, stole a background I wanted and
had a mate combine and burn it for me. Some firmware is just
cheaply stored on a rom chip - you have to replace those (approx $40).
Depends on the player as you said.

Here is an example of what you are looking for I think:
