  1. I would like to set the .flv format to open with a particular .flv player by default.
Right now, when I directly click onto a .flv file, it opens in mpeg streamclip software.
My goal is to have .flv files open in vlc software when .flv files are clicked on directly.

I can't seem to find a default setting for vlc in the Preferences drop-down menu.

Thanks for any tips on how I can make vlc software the default player for .flv files.

Right-click on an flv file and select Open With from the menu. Click on the player you want to use, make sure that 'Make this the default application . . . . ' and click OK.

    It's quite hard to find.
In the Preferences dialog, set 'Show Settings' to 'Simple', and select the 'Interface' page.
Scroll down and you will find 'Association Setup' in the 'Instances' section.

This is by far the easiest way to do this.

I thought this would be the way to go, too.
I find this works for individual flv files only, not for "all" flv files.
This approach allows the individual flv file to open with vic by default, but when I then directly click
on another flv file (that I haven't individually specified to open with vic), it will open with the default Steamclip (in my case).
And yes, I ensure that the "Always open with..." option is check-marked.
Using this approach, I would have to open every single flv file and and specify that each individual flv file open with the vic software.

This brings me back to trying to make vic the default flv player directly from the vic Preferences menu.

In the Preferences dialog, set 'Show Settings' to 'Simple', and select the 'Interface' page.
Scroll down and you will find 'Association Setup' in the 'Instances' section.

Where do I access these settings you mention above?
I have to admit I can't find any of them within the Preferences window.

The options within the Preferences window include: Interface, Audio, Video, Subtitles & OSD, Input & Codecs, and Hotkeys.

Within the above sub-menus, where can I locate: Show Settings, Interface, Association Setup, and Instances?

Also, according to my vlc player, I have the latest version (1.0.5).

    Thanks again.

Show Settings is at the bottom left, under Hotkeys, but your description indicates you are already in 'simple' settings mode. Click on Interface (if it's not already selected). 'Instances' should appear near the bottom of the page, but (as I said) you will have to scroll down (using the scroll bar on the right) to make the Association Setup button come into view.

right click the file then select "Choose Program" at bottom of the dialog box. Check the box at the bottom that says "always use this program to open this type of file" then select the player you want to use.

Right click on a flv file in windows explorer- select properties- you will see type of file, opens with, along with change button. click on change button and then select program you want, if it is not listed choose browse to locate it on your HD. The dialog box you get is the same one mentioned above with choose program, except that the box ' always use...' is checked by default and greyed out.
