Vob..Edit...Back to Vob..OMG I give up!!

I've been trying all day to edit VOB files from my DVD recorder, and edit them, but all the programs I use produce MPEG2 files, which for some reason won't burn properly with my SONICDVD software. I keep getting errors at the end of writing (The disks do play though). I've come to the conclusion that rocket science must be easier than this. There are so many Codecs and Authoring tools I am now completely confused, and don't know what to try next. Why won't an MPEG2 file cut from a VOB file burn properly?
