Dub vhs tapes to dvd-r/-rw Not compatible with other players

My grandfather has a vhs/dvd dubbing player and the discs he burns wont play on my uncles dubbing machine nor my uncles regular dvd player. Also, discs burned on my uncles dubber machine wont play on his regular dvd machine nor my grandfathers dubbing player.

Both machines used the same blank discs, a combination of Memorex and Fujifilm Dvd-R, and both types of discs were finalized when the dubbing proccess was finished. Each dubbing machine can read its own recorded disc fine, but the regular dvd player cant read either machines discs.

My question is why cant the players read each others discs? Both types were dubbed in the same fashion with the same type of blank media. I know there are regular players out there that will have compatibility issues with any blank media discs, but you would figure that a dubbing-specific machine could read a disc from another dubbing machine, especially if it was all done in the same way?

I also hate thinking that one day when either of these players die out my gramps and uncle will be stuck with a bunch of dubbed discs that wont be able to play on any other player. What can I do to play these discs on another player and/or what can I do to the current dubbing machines settings to make other players understand these discs?

Did you finalize the discs on the recorder? This is something you need to do before they will play on another player.
