    aarrrgh!
just had to vent for a minute...I was watching a couple of
compilation animated DVDs I had made earlier this year
on Comp USA branded DVD-Rs, and I was getting bad pixelation,
and the eventual stop that happens, where the player just can't go any further.
Well, so I took it out of the player, tried Galactica's
soap trick, and put it back in, pressed play, I got audio, no video!
So I ejected it again, looked at it under the light closely,
and that's when I noticed...Several spots on top were flaking off,
leaving blank spots in the disk underneath!!

aaarrrggghhh! I mean these discs are less than 5 months old!
Talk about the cheapest of the CHEAP!! well,
needless to say, I 'll happily re-create it to DVD on TDK branded
media, but I just had to vent for a minute!!

  2. You should stink-palm those Comp USA rats (if you don't know what I'm talking about, watch Mallrats.)
Just use the disk instead, and mail it in w/ a complaint. They'll never know where that smell came from.

  7. I guess I should've posted what works for me- I'm using Prodisc 4X disks and haven't had a coaster yet (they're the printable type- and prices should be declining soon to the introduction of the DL disks !)

And I think they deserve it for selling you that stuff in the first place !

    duh!
    you kill me.....
    from my original post:

like check the forum, dude...since April 04 I've been using
TDK 2x DVD-Rs...and have been swearing by them.
My POINT with this post was to just vent on DVDs that
I had bought back in December of last year, burned in
January, and they didn't even last six months ( Jul 04)...
I KNEW already the caveat of "you get what you pay for..."
    but D A M N !!! SIX MONTHS, perfectly stored in binders,
and the media STILL breaks down and flakes...?
    Now that's some SH!TTY media...
as if mac users didn't have enough to complain about COMPUSA
    in the first place....

but, yes, FCP...they deserve the stink palm twenty times over!!

Need some pics. The DVDs are written to the middle not the top, what's happening to that top layer shouldn't matter to the disc. If the upper surface were being used, it would be just general reflectivity etc and just some silver paint in the gaps would likely make it readable to get the data off..

I have some of these but they're fine, I may have to scratch one up just to see..

  10. No No... the discs will be ruined if even a tiny bit of the (seems like thin foil) covering of the disk is flaked. They are extremely unstable and frustrating (I learned my lesson when I bought some old school cd-rs back in the day... flaked and lost my media).

  11. Wait a minute, I re-read that last post and I don't know if you fill in the flakes w/ silver paint if it will help... but that would still piss me off to have to keep a can of spraypaint w/ me to read a disk

    And the buzzer goes XXXXXXXX!

He said DVDs not CD-Rs. DVDs have the data in a layer in the middle of the disc not the top like a CD. Reflectivity might possibly affect things on a poorly made one, but the data layer is not missing when it peels off like on a CD.

  14. Alan, you got me on the Cd part, but I firmly stand behind my stance on their DVDr media being ass worthy. I was merely stating that I had that happen long ago and realized their media was sub-par. CD or DVD
Either way, I use prodisc now and would be happy to give a testimonial to their quality (at the moment anyhow). Ritek (riotek on some pages) also is quality Peace you guys!

I'm not just saying that these DVDs are not bad. I just wanna say this. Today, it's the day after thanksgiving sale at CompUSA. They were selling this spindle, blank DVDs(4x, 100 pack) for $19.99 each.

I've bought 2 spindles and the total came out to $20.82
Now, that's a deal right there. I'm so happy

Such a deal, and it only cost you 940 GB of data...

Its like you tell a person they are about to walk into a burning house, and they go oh, is this a burning house? then when they get inside the burning house they are perplexed as to why its so hot in there.

    he,he,he...
    good one ant!

He would have been better just keeping up with the paper
three weeks prior to Black Friday:

TDK DVD-R 25 pack spindles were on sale for $9.95 each.
No rebates, no instant off, just on sale. Sure they were 2x,
but for $40 I got 100 blanks and zero headaches.
    Priceless!
