I've been happily using Virtualdub for a while, but decided I wanted to try and capture at 720x480, just as an expreiment. As Virtualdub only works in a VFW mode it seemed like it would not allow me to go to that resolution with my setup. So I dl'd VirtualVCR.

I searched for setup advice using VirtualVCR and got it to capture at 720x480, but wound up with very bad sync problems. The audio stream turned out to be way longer than the video stream. I don't have any sync problems when using Virtualdub. I have Resample Audio Dynamically checked and Adjust Stream Offset unchecked.

I then started noticing some odd things in some of the setup panels (at least, they seem odd to me). In the Compress Audio properties I can't find a 48KHz, 16 bit, 178 Kb/s Stereo choice. At those parameters I only have an option for 768 Kb/s. Next, on the Video panel under Use Custom Settings it does not have anything but RGB24 for Color Format. This has me confused, as I went to the Device Settings panel and did select YUY2 in the Video Format subpanel. That's another problem: sometimes the buttons on the Device Settings panel are grayed out, and sometimes they're not, and I can't figure out why!

Anyway, back to the audio sync question. Any ideas as to what I can try from within VirtualVCR to get things lined up?

  2. Try checking "adjust stream offset". The only sync issues I had with V-VCR vanished when configured this way.
As for the rest, not sure why this is happening. On my machine RGB24 is easily selectable from custom settings.

I'll give that a try. Which version of V-VCR are you using?

  4. 2.6.9 is my version. Very reliable software IMO.

But Matt, that's part of my problem. RGB 24 is the ONLY choice in that drop down list. Shouldn't the others be there? (like YUY2, YUV2, etc???)

I tried checking the "Adjust Strem Offset" box (and also kept the Sync Using Streams Offset button selected). I ran a 6 minute test and still got a .3 second difference between audio and video streams. Vdub gives me less than .15 second difference over the course of two hours. I'll try a longer test. If the V-VCR difference is contant I may be able to use the Offset parameter to fix it.

BTW, do you get a 178 Kb/sec selection for Audio, Stereo, 48 KHz, 16 bit?

As to paragraphs 1 and 2 above, what audio format are you capturing to? Try pcm at 1536kbps, 48KHz, 16 bit. That what I use and works fine for me.

As far as the RGB24 problem, it's probably a codec issue. I had the same problem once after I did a fresh Windows install. Went away after I reinstalled all the old codecs I had under the old Windows installation. Unfortunately, I can't tell you which one did the trick, as I re-installed quite a few.

As far as your last problem -- that's just weird -- I don't have any suggestion for that, but I can tell you it's never happened to me.

But they show up in Virtualdub, so shouldn't they show up in V-VCR?

Maybe I'll just try uninstalling and reinstalling the program.

VDub is VFW and VirtualVCR is a WDM app - they use two different codec schemes. Check with your capture cad manufacturer and see if they have an updated WDM driver.

You did not mention what card/capture device you are using - without that bit of information, any suggestions offered by this group is nothing more than a guess.

Sorry about that. It's an Osprey 2000 DV Pro. No WDM drivers that I'm aware of, I'm afraid. But it's own driver and applet set are capable of supporting up to 720x480, and shows RGB 32, 24, and 15, Grey8, and YUY2, YUV12, and YVU9 Color Formats. We used a bunch of these at work for video production a few yaers ago (it has a pretty good combination of hardware encoder/decoder), and I got one when they were being surplused.
