Lately, I've been getting the same "spikes" on the same part of the discs I burn, is this a media or hardware issue? Here's the latest K-Probe results:-
The first PIF spike is usually always roughly 10 minutes into the film.

first off its best to scan at 4x seeing as all readers/writers have different speeds.. the other is remove highest spike. as they are not always acurate.. lastly to answer your ? that scan is a pretty good scan the PIF MAX is a bit on the higher side but still well within the limits PI is ok too but thePI total is a bit on the higer side...tose disks should play fine in your set top player i would rescan and look at hte data again.. also spikes are made from a lot of things. re-cal of lazer durring speed increase is the most common.. goto the liteon forum and read around.. lots of good stuff there for you to read.. speed hacks and firmware tweeks too.

These spikes almost exactly in the same place, on the last 5 burns I've done, with the same media and different content
Surely a lazer re-calibration wouldn't occur in the same place everytime?
They play fine in my set top DVD player except for at the first spike where there is some pixellation for a few seconds and then it's fine. The drives only approx 10 months old and has been OK up till now. Firmware is the latest official version. -

P-CAV = Partial - Constant Angular Velocity. The drive starts writing at a lower speed, usually at about 4x. Then, the number of RPMs stays constant, so that the recording speed increases smoothly. When the maximum speed is reached, such as 8x 12xor 16x, the drive switches to CLV

So yes it will happen at the same place.. it just depends on your drives write strat.. i found that my liteon 1633s love to burn +R at 8X it will do them in just under 7 min.. where as a 16x might take 615 or so.. its all do to the CAV CLV thing..
hope this clears up some of this for you..
FYI i get awsomw scans with richojpnR01 and ritekR03 +R medix 4x branded writen at 8X.. i can post some scans if you like
P.S. im not saying that is your trouble.. jsut that it is possible.. alot has to do with the media too.. spikes can be a few things.. if your seeing the effects in your settop then it could be due ot a few things.. try a slower burn .. i strongly sugest you go to that page and update to the latest codeguys firmware and use their recomended tweeks.. they ahve researched the best possible strats for most media and made it possible to update your burner.. you can still use official FW just update the tweeks.. you can also update your burner to the 832S if you like ot get DL ability.. have a look -

well maybe.. but i really dont think thats the trouble.. it prolly the media. or something changed on your computer.. possible hdd more fraged.. new SW new software running in background.. if its a HW issue then something is happening to the burner at the same time every time like when it tries to speed up the hdd does a seek or something.. if not then its the media. try a differnt media. i hear BB has a great sale going on now..
Edit: i see you have been a member there for a while.. all i can add is that from all i have read and done.. new spikes are commonly media or computer related posibly causing buffer underruns or something..
worth a shot trying the recomended tweeks at teh very least. -
Who are BB? Is this an American store as I'm based in the UK. Getting some advice on CDFreaks so I'll hopefully get this licked. Fingers crossed.
-
sorry BB= best buy.. that is our big computer/audio/electronics store here in the US
P.S. im watching your thread there too.. FYI he is going to tell you to rescan it at 4x.. might want to beat thim to the punch. -
i see he said basicly what i thought.. remember if you do what he code said i would apply the recomended tweeks on his site too along with stoc firmware.. as he said you can always go back.
use omnipatcher with the FW he said and there is a file with tweeks.. you should be good to go after that. -
I've ordered some more Verbatim discs, this time the 8x ones although my drive can only burn at 4x.
-
Thats a good start.. but you ca nonly hope you get a good batch.. ive found htat if you go to newegg and read the reviews youll be able to determine the media code. im sure you have a good idea on the ones you got though.. i dont know about your drive.. but i found that everyone says my 1633s loves richojpnR01 and riteckR03 +R media so i looked all over and found the most likely brand with them.. did you look around and try to find out what people say are best for your drive? it should all be here..
GL
P.S. if you crosspatch your drive with the firmware on codes page your burner can burn them at 8Xremember if you have troubles you can always go back.
