I know I'll probably get pounded by the widescreen fanatics, but is there some way to make my widescreen DVDs fullscreen? My new player has a zoom, but the old one doesn't. Watching a widescreen movie on a 25" TV pretty much blows to me.

I will have to cut off my fingers after typing this, but herer goes.
1. Rip DVD to HDD.
2. Use ifoedit to demux movie and audio back to streams.
3. Use either tmpgenc or virtualdubmod to resize to full screen (if you use virtualdubmod you will have to use a seperate encoder to get back to mpeg-2)
4. Use you favourite authoring program to remux audio and create DVD compliant files
5. Burn back to DVD
You will lose all your menus and extras, as well as any other languages and subtitles.
If you are very adventurous, you might be able to use ifoedit to put the cropped movie back into the original structure and keep everything else intact.
Right - I'm off to sever my offending fingers now. -
I just love marketing.
Doesn't "Full screen" sound like you're getting more, when in truth you're getting about 27% (estimate) less?
I actually watched a "full screen" movie a couple of weeks ago, and in one scene you couldent see either of the two people having a conversation.
guns1inger, no need to sever any fingers. Just convert them to full screen!!!I don't have a bad attitude...

I believe the average person actually thinks they're getting less because the top and bottom are missing!!!

-
its not scenes.. its things to the left and right that you miss.. like other people in the scene.. items. stuff like that.. the fillms are filmed in lets say for example 70mm wide frames.. the frames of the film are rectangles not square so in order to get all the scene on the tv it needs to be pulled back so the whole frame fits in.. most are 16:9 tvs are 4:3 ratio so you loose stuff not time.. but if you tried to watch a widescreen movie on a 4" square lcd portable i could se a dis advantage. if your on a 25" your gonna have a smaller picture that you like but just sit a bit closer youll get more all around

Granted, there have been cases of that from videos originally filmed way back when, but movies that are modern and have been filmed for theatre's are filmed in widescreen format, so when you see it full screen on a tv, there are many times parts of a scene that are missing or you don't see the entire scene that is going on at that moment.
There are prob. alot of things that don't really need to be seen that are lost in a FS version, dune, saving private ryan, gladiator, like during fight or battle scene's, i prefer to see everything going on instead of just a cropped center view.......

Like here... I would much rather see the entire scene instead of the cropped version.... like where gandolf is standing.... the widescreen version gives SO MUCH more depth to the scene... thats the way it was intended to be seen!!! -
full screen (cropped)
Widescreen (the whole scene)
Many more Examples at the link....

I've watched them both ways and know exactly what I'm missing, I prefer fullscreen. I knew this was coming.

I guess it's a personal pref.
But just saying, the diff. between these to me is the WS gives so much more depth to the scene....
And fanatic is so harsh!!!!!!!!
Believe it or not, there was a time many years ago when i HATED WS!!!! -
I have a 4:3 Sony 29 inches TV.
It sucks when I watch 16:9 movies, because only about a half of the screen is used for the display.
But it sucks even more when I zoom in to the full screen, so my experience is that it is not a good idea to go for a full screen when your source is 16:9 DVD.
On the other hand, I do have a few DVD editions double sided, where one side is 16:9 and the other 4:3 (USA DVD's), so I can enjoy a movie no matter what kind of a TV display I use.
I love those doublesided DVD's where you have an option to watch 4:3 or 16:9. Too bad such a DVD's are not a common practice and are rarely encountered. -
For me it not a matter of widescreen being the best or only option, but the original aspect ratio being the best way to view the film. I have as much respect for the 1.33 camera work in Citizen Kane as I do for the 2.20 in Lawrence of Arabia. I watch these films because I like the directors. I know that every shot is framed and composed in the way the director intended to get their ideas and vision across. I would no more want to see Citizen Kane cropped to 1.85 than I would Lawrence of Arabia cropped to 1.33. Even studio P&S work can very poor (John Carpenter's The Thing - scene in hall early on after dogs go crazy - Kurt Russel has a knife that is not visible in the P&S version, but clearly visible, and important, in the OAR version).
This is one of the reasons I have opted not to move to a widescreen TV, but have stayed with my trusty Loewe 4:3 with 16:9 switching. I guess I watch movies for a different reason to some of you.Read my blog here.

Watching ultra-widescreen, like the example above, blows on a small TV. Hell, it blows on our 53" Sony. Even with the black below and above, we still have a much larger viewing area than most. And you know what ...it still blows :P Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I think the whole friggin screen ought to be full of nice, moving pictures. It's annoying as hell when it isn't
I watch the widescreen movies and get the uncomfortable feeling that I'm sitting inside a tank ...viewing the world through a gun slit
We always look for full screen when there's a choice. Always.
It's a matter of personal preference ...there are those who prefer widescreen ...and then there are the ones who are right
I know the purists will be upset, but WTF? -

My post has a point on double sided DVD's with the display option between 4:3 or 16:9.
It is nice to have that option, wouldn't you say? -

Anyway, I'm not trying to change your mind. It just seems weird to me, kind of like someone wanting to listen to music through a telephone because they're used to it.
I suspect it's not so much a size issue for many. If the screen was one mile wide and one mile high, and was letterboxed, people would complain.
Yes, it's good to have the choice because b4 DVD's there usually wasn't one - you simply missed part of every movie.I don't have a bad attitude...

Now instead of missing part of every movie you miss part of the TV screen on every movie.

I personally don't understand how anyone could stand having up to half the picture chopped off, and the remaining picture arbitrarily moved around to compensate, but I can respect that this is a personal preference and some people just want the picture to fill their screen despite how much it must vary from the oar.
But for anyone who prefers FS, just keep in mind that one day WS tv's will be the industry standard (widescreen films are already the industry standard) and all your FS movies will play with large black boxes on the sides. Talk about a double whammy. -
Whats with all the hatred of Full Screen viewers. Its obvious the people in this post know what their getting, or not getting.
Some people prefer the whole TV screen filled up, you can't argue with that.
I used to hate WS, but now I can't stand FS, but I definitely understand why some people just can't watch a movie with black bars. -

samijubal,
Are you asking how to do your own Pan/Scan on widescreen captures or just ranting that widescreen exists?
It will be expensive in software and time to do your own 4x3.
You will save both money and time by buying the full screen version or capturing full screen in the first place. -
Not all movies exist in fullscreen, if they did there wouldn't have been any need for this thread because I wouldn't have any widescreen DVDs. I asked if there was a way to make them fullscreen, that doesn't sound like ranting to me.
