help with purchasing a DVD Recorder

i am wanting to buy a recorder ( similar to tivo) that i can record shows straight off the regular (not digital) cable signal at home. that way i can watch when i need to. anyway does anyone have any suggestions or products i can try to buy. basically i want a machine similar to a vcr that will just record off cable. i know im a noobie so please take it easy on me.
