    Use Virtual Dub.

    1. Load the Video

    2. Select File=>Save Wav...

    3. Use the original file for video only.

    You can select audio direct stream and save the ac3 as wave and retain its 5.1 but it will have a wav header that needs to be removed,use besplit to fix it and rename the file to xxx.ac3.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

    It's your choice. VDub can either just demux the audio, leaving it in the same shape it was before it was interleaved in the AVI, or be processed to a different format - which, depends on what audio codecs you have on your system.

    Again:
    Load AVI in VirtualDub.
    Select "Direct stream copy" under Audio, then "Save WAV" Now you got the audio as one file, in the format it is in the original AVI, but with .wav exyension.
    Now, select "No audio" under Audio, "Direct Stream Copy" under Video, then Save as AVI. This gives you a video only AVI, with the same characteristics as your source AVI.
