  1. I've just updated a Nero 5.5.7.2 copy on my Win98 computer to Nero 5.5.10.56 in the hopes of being able to reliably burn DVD-/+R. However I haven't seen the CD/DVD pull down menu when you create a new compilation in Nero. Using the Wizard, the DVD option is greyed-out. Am I missing something or is this because I am yet to install a DVD burner in my computer?

    System:
    Win98
    Celeron 300 Mhz
    192MB RAM
No DVD Burner yet. Just a CD Burner for now.

You won't see the dvd option until you install a dvd burner ..... however looking at your system spec i think you should consider an upgrade before you consider a dvd burner .... a 300mhz celeron is just not going to cut it when it comes to dvd burning .... also i would consider upgrading to win xp although win 98 will burn dvd's the fat32 file systems puts a few restrictions on what you can do, upgrade to win xp with an ntfs file system.

  3. I would spend the $175USD towards CPU/motherboard/RAM instead of WinXP/2000....that is if you still have the Win98 CD.

I did suggest a faster cpu/mb upgrade the win xp was just another suggestion .... if money is tight and velociracer can't afford both upgrades then the mb/cpu should take priority .... win 98will still be good for burning dvdr's ... only the file size restictions of win 98 may be a problem depending onn what he want to use his burner for .... i.e win 98 (fat 32) has a 4gb file size limit .... not much use if you want to make an iso image of 4.7gb (standard size of a dvdr)...but if he just wants to make backups of his dvd collection then he can rip in file mode (in this mode the files are only 1gb (max) per file).... win xp with an ntfs file system doesn't have the 4 gb limit and iso files are less of a problem

You can auto size iso files using decrypter. I have 98 and rip dvd5s to iso all the time and then burn. No problem. I don't think 98 is really a problem for most dvd activities. The speed of the cpu will matter most when shrinking. I think I would just try it. It will take a long time to shrink a dvd9 down, but I think it will do it.

You have to enable the DVD options to show up:

File>Preferences>Expert Features>Enable image recorder for all supported formats

After checking that box, the little pulldown for DVD or CD will appear in the top left of the New Compilation screen

  7. Thanks for the replies! I have pre-shrunk VOB files on existing DVD- or +R that I want to copy straight. So from a 4.7GB source, can I still burn exact copies of the contents of another DVD-/+R on a system like mine? Money is tight and I would rather not upgrade this 6 y/o puter. I just want to be sure about the burner & Nero working or not for the few DVD-R I want to copy before I spend $70 on a Plextor. The mail-in rebate expires end of this month. tick tock.

If you're copying a non-copy-protected single-layer DVD, yeah. Just set up the new disc in Nero and click and drag from the old disc ...or rip from disc to a temp folder, then click and drag....and burn

  9. Just like Capmaster said, I had to go into preferences and enable image recorder and it worked like a charm!

One observation I have, the compilation length (capacity) at the bottom status bar shows the yellow and red dotted lines right below 4500MB. Is this what you were referring to with Win98 size limits? Will this be a problem trying to copy a another home made DVD+/-R?

  10. Yes if you make an image over 4GB,No if you drag the VIDEO_TS folder.
I don't recommend making a disc to disc copy(Quick Copy).

Actually, that is the size limit of a DVD. There is a single file 4 gig limit in 98, but this can be overcome by splitting.

  12. Thanks everyone. I don't like the Copy Disc to Disc option myself, so there should be no need for me to create one whole image file more han 4.7GB. I just plan to drag and drop into my compilation from existing VIDEO_TS files.

If I use the burner to backup data files, will I be able to utilize the full 4.7GB capacity if I drag an drop files and folders into my compilation (DVD-ROM ISO i suppose)?
