I have a full screen video and I simply just want to make it wide screen. I tried using the clip frame method in TMPGEnc but it just cuts off the video. Is it also possible to do it in Virtual Dub?

Center (custom size) in arrange settings, right? Well, I'm trying to convert my videos to a portable player and wide screen videos seem to play smoother.

making it widescreeen will not make it play smoother. probably some fps problems or codec problems. what is the source?

It's actually an mp3 player but it supports videos now. However, it's limited to 10 FPS, 220x176, and maximum bitrate of 500. I presumed wide screen would have less video information so it'll seem like it's running smoother, or at least sharper, than full screen. I'm probably wrong though.
Is higher bitrate always better? -
Higher bitrate is not better if the player can't keep up with the data flow! If you have a sink and pour more water than can go down the drain then it will eventually overflow. This is what happens to your mp3 player if you feed it too high a bitrate.
Sorry, I had to go see about a girl
