I have a Sony DRU-530a and when i burn at 8x, it starts out at 4x and burns at 4x for like 25-30 percent. Then it jumps to 8x and finishes up there. Also i noticed that the disc was one shade at 4x and another shade at 8x. Just to clear it up the disc had to shades of color on the bottom. I thought that was really odd. I have the latest firmware and im using the 8x memorex discs. Ill try to post a picture of the disc, but its really hard to take. I'd appreciate any response.

I'm fairly certain that this is normal behavior for almost all DVD burners to actually burn in this manner, when burning at higher speeds such as 8x.
-
Really because i was under the impression that when you burn at 8x it should do it for the whole disc, and that the disc shoud not be two different colors. My brother has the same exact burner and he doesnt have this problerm.
-
nope hes right, itll start slow then the buffer with refill and the speed will increase to 8.
thats the different colored ring on the disc.on the inside portion of it.
and as for your brother,it seems hes not writing at 8 speed then, more than likely either the media and/or software isnt working right, because there should be a darker section in the middle. -
How big should the inner ring be, because mine is either a 1/4 or a 1/3 of the radius of the disc. Is that normal, or does my burner write at 4x longer then other burners.
-
I have no experience with this specifically, but from my readings (and when you have burn proof on), it starts burning at the slower speeds and then when "it" calculates that it can burn faster it does.
At least on a 4x burner, my burner starts out at 1/2x for about 2 seconds and then ramps up to 4x. This disagrees with your 25-30% start at slower speed then ramps up statement, but it may hold water. -
Yup. There are NO burners that start at 8x, and there may never be. Just like even 54x CD burners start at 16-18x, even 16x DVD burners start at 6x. Some software won't report this - Nero just says "8x" for an 8x burn. But there is a registry change that will show the real burn speed at any given time.
-
so im wonder how long does it take all of you to burn a dvd at 8x, from start to finish it takes me just under 10 min. I still think it is odd that my burner burns constantly at 8x for 1.6 GB, i could understand if it started at 4x and worked up to 8x but it is just constant. Which leads me to believe something is wrong. All of you made great points, and you guys are probably right even if it doesnt sit right with me. Thanks alot for all of your help.
PS: if any of you are had this problem and fixed it let me know -
yes i also would like to know how long should it take to burn a FULL disc at 8x. i currently have a 4x burner and it takes about 15 minutes. i am thinking of buying an 8x thinking it would take half the time but if it is going to take about 10 minutes then thats almost pointless. in this case how long is it taking people to burn a full disc who are burning 8x media at 16x?
-
Yes, welcome to the world of 'high speed' DVD burning. In reality, an 8x burn still takes 'about' 10 minutes and a 16x burn will only knock about 2 minutes off of that time. The thought of stable burns at 10 minutes is appealing, but shaving a couple of minutes off to get it down to 7 1/2-8 minute burns that may or may not burn perfectly (unless you are using TY perhaps), no thanks. Having discs that still work in two years is more important than saving two minutes to burn the disc now, at least for me...

"yes i also would like to know how long should it take to burn a FULL disc at 8x"
You can always do the math, its pretty consistent, 2x = 40min, 4x= 20min, 8x= 10 min etc. -
There is alot of wisdom in this forum, i tried buringing 4x for the first time in awhile and the burn was good. the bottom of the disc was only one color b/c it didnt have to jump to a higher speed. the 8x discs worked though, but i think steve2713 and handyguy are right that a few minutes now doesnt matter years from now. Yet i still would like to know if anyone else has theirs burn at 4x for 1.6 gigs and then 8x for the rest. I would make me feel better.

It is probably going to change its speed at different spots on the disc, dependent on the burner being used. I've burned a couple of 4x RICOHJPN R01 discs at 8x on my Benq 822, and they came out essentially the same quality as my 4x burns. But lesser quality media doesn't hold up good at all to 'overclocking' burns. On this drive, the speed jump occurred at about 1gb. I really have NO desire to burn at 16x, as 16x is nearing the physical limits of burning DVDs - my car engine may be able to hit 8000rpm, but I'd just assume not push my luck there either
. I'm the same with CDs - Even though I CAN burn at 48x, I burn at 24x or 32x usually.

I want to try a different route to this problem.
lets assume that what my drive is doing is not normal, what would cause a drive to do this. I have the latest firmware, and aspi. my drive is set at master, and there is a slave. My guess is that there is some protocol built into some of the software or firmware that i have that locks the first 1.6 GB at 4x and then allows it to jump to a higher speed. So if any of you have a sony DRU-530a dvd burner and have burned at 8x, let me know how long it take and if you have 2 different colored rings.
thanx, you guys have helped me alot -
its possible that its the media.. the fact that it gets up to 8X that means its able to do it so its not aspi or dma or cable. the only other thing is it could be a setting or something im not real sure.. if you have another computer try it in there to see if it acts the same.. then you can narrow it down to your system or possibly media..
sorry not more help -
Revelation!!!
I just checked a couple of 8x disks that I recorded today. The first one had 3 distinct ring areas. The second one none - the recording surface was uniform in appearance. The third one had one ring at the center.
So, I guess the "ringing" is an 8x thing and not a SONY thing. The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
@sasi
hmm all my 8X burns have no rings other than the data ring and if any the un used area.. very different looking but i almost always fill them up.. with both my media types they have no rings to speak of.. i can try to scan them to show ya if you like -
wow thats a good idea, ill try to see if it burns the same another computer. Also i would like to see a picture of your dvds, ill try to get one of mine but my camera is gone for repairs, but ill see if i can borrow one. Im using memorex 8x dvd-r, which i thought were good. But ill get some tdk 8x ones today just to make sure its not the media.

All of my 8x burns take 8.5 min for a full disc(4.37GB),they start off at 6x then at approx. 20% it bumps to 7.5-8x.
BTW...I use a BenQ DW800A and none of my DVD's have inner rings. -
Here is a scan of RICHOJPNR01 burnt at 8X the top is a movie the bottom is a blank disk. you can see where i called out all the areas.. this disk took me 6:45 to burn.
i can scan the R03 but they look the same.. they just take me about 1min longer to burn.. you see there are no rings from burning other than the data ring.. maybe thats what you are seeing.. i put the blank down for a reference.. -
Good God, just read the darn manual that came with your drive.
ALL DRIVES DO THIS.
Liteon owners are lucky enough to be able to (or cursed enough to HAVE to, depending on how you look at it) fiddle with their jump points.
Any speed over 4x has "shift points". Even 4x ramps up... my Liteon starts at around 2x and works up to 4x over the course of the first 15-20 seconds of writing, when I burn at 4x. 6x and 8x have "shift points" where the drive tries to shift up to the higher speed.
Just get over it. If the discs work, don't worry.
Personally I just burn at 4x. It's more stable, and only takes a couple extra minutes. -
I think i found the answer to my problem after taking Gurm's advice i did some reseach on my drive, and i think i found the answer (on this site believe or not). My dvd burner is ZCLV, which stands for Zone Constant Linear Velocity. Which means that the drive burns in zones, i have two zones on my disc. That answers my question. For all of you with questions about how long you burn should take, and what other things relating to DVD writing mean go to this link:
https://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=80&Search=Search&list=
At the bottom of the page there is alot of info about how long differnt types of write modes take. Next time i get a burner i will try to get a CAV or CLV burner. this site says my burn should take from 8-10 minutes. Mine takes 9.5 which is in the range but near the top. Thanks for all you help. When i called tech support they had no idea what was wrong, just shows how much better this site is.[/url]
