I read some forums on the subject, but I wanted to make sure I did not miss a forum. I bought a DVD but noticed that it was PAL encoded. I'm waiting for it. I'm guesing I can view with PowerDVD (I hope). But can I make a backup of it using DVDSHINK 3.2. Is it possible.? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

    You can copy it, absolutely.

That copy will ALSO be in PAL though.

To convert it is a pain in the butt process... straightforward enough but involving a bunch of steps. Nobody makes an all-in-one converter. You can do movie only at varying levels of quality through processes outlined in the guides to the <----------- LEFT.

  4. From what I read you cannot copy a pal disk to ntsc and keep the menus, so having taken that as correct here are three simple methods to do it:-

1: use dvd shrink or decrypter to "copy" the disk to a file which has no encryption on it.(iso?) or as dvd files, vob etc

using tmpg author use the "add dvd video" option and again make another file which the software will create as a mpg file.

Using power producer gold 2, use the start wizard to tell the software that you want a ntsc dvd, then a menu or two later import the mpg file you just created and follow the steps, don;t worry about producing a good menu, tmpg author will do that(I think you can just use a trial version for a one off) you just want to create a ntsc dvd first.

PP Gold will produce dvd files in ntsc or pal for that matter and you can author them how you like.

You can use encoding software like tmpg express or canopus procoder express, but it takes a long time but the quality is probably the best.

2: Again start off with a dvd or dvd files which have been decrypted from the original dvd by using shrink or decrypter.

Burn a blank disk from them, buy a rj tech dvd recorder :-

    http://www.rjtech.net/dvdr.html

and using the decrypted copy of the pal dvd you have copy it from your dvd player to the rj unit with its option set to ntsc, it will record an ntsc dvd disk for you.

3: leave the simplest to last, get a player similiar to philips 727 which will convert pal disks to ntsc for playback and with the region hack be region free as well.

As you can tell I should not be writing guides, thats why I haven't, but believe me these ideas work.

4: (Yes I know I didn't mention a 4) Send me the disk and I'll convert it for you!
    PAL/NTSC problem solver.

  5. I had the exact same issue a while back and someone on this forum was able to give me some great instructions on how to accomplish this task. While he explained the process as simply as possible, it is not for the novice and I wish you luck. Here is the thread:

I'm sure that will work, but you really don't need to add the extra step. Power Producer 2 Gold will open the vobs directly- no reason to take the time to have TMPG convert them to mpg files first.

The issue is that most of the "one step" re-encoders mung up the process because they don't do the appropriate pulldown on the video. You're stepping from 25 to 29 fps... (or 25 to 24, as the case may be) not just changing the frame size.

There's a quick and dirty workaround for flipping PAL to NTSC and NTSC to PAL. The main movie will be rendered with the right vertical resolution but the menus will look out of proportion.

That method works on fewer players than not.
