You don't convert a dvd player to play pal, either it does or it does not.

The problem is usually the region coding of the disc, either make a backup of the disc that is region free (region set to all) or find a hack to make your player region free.
Then hope your $sony will convert PAL to NTSC.

But as hech54 stated, $ony, neither one.

On the optimistic side of things, you have maybe a .01% of it being done and a 99.9% chance it can't be done, although i have never heard of it being done.

If the original poster lives in North America, I am not aware of any Sony players currently sold in that area that can be unlocked for multi-region play. In the past Sony did sometimes support PAL playback even if the player could not be unlocked so you could try ripping a PAL DVD from another region and burning a region free copy as that might play. But that's not really much of a solution. By the way, the situation is equally grim for Samsung players sold in North America.

If it's not a large number of DVD's, how about converting the PAL to NTSC?
