ATI Macrovision Removal Re-visited...again.

Hi all,

Ok, been playing around a little with the ATI drivers and found out (accidentally really) a couple of things.

One, the documentation with the old ATI hack on the internet says that the offending file is called atinmdxx.sys and that's the file that he patches. I think ATI has fixed that and that file is no longer even used. Even though it still comes with the newer versions of Catalyst. I have deleted that file completely in 'Safe mode' and any and all copies of it all over the hard drive with no change. Everything still works just as if it were never there.

Second, I fiddled with a file called ativmvxx.ax (in the System32 directory) and finally got it to where the 'Record' button will not ghost out when trying to record a Macrovisioned tape. Now I can record it but the picture still flickers and gets light and dark.

Does anybody know the person that wrote the old ATI driver patch or maybe someone that can write a new one? I think we can lick this ATI Macrovision son-of-a-gun and not even need TBC's or Sima's with just a little bit of programming expertise of which I am sorely lacking.

By the way, I have the ATI AIW 9000 Pro, MMC 9.02 and the latest Catalyst drivers.

I found that even using drivers and a version of MMC that worked with the hacks didn't correct the light/dark picture cycling effect of MV. So I think some sort of MV defeating device such as a SIMA would stil be necessary.

If you do digital video long enough, no way to avoid a TBC at some point in time.

You will not eliminate the light/dark problem in software because
it is a hardware effect. I have investigated this extensively

earlier MMC (or other) sofware will not work ??

Yeah, I'm beginning to see that you guys are right about still needing a TBC at least. On my pension I can't afford to buy one though, wonder if you can just rent one for a day?

I am a long time user of ATI cards. My ATI VIVO 64 meg DDR card did a good job of capturing. My new AIW 9800 is a fiasco. The pictures lighten and darken-just horribly! The old ATI card did not do this. However, I now have my new computer with the AIW 9800 and I was stuck. TBC too expensive.
I use my new JVC DVD recorder to capture and I have not had a problem with purchased VCR tapes to date. I find this a much better way to do things-then edit on the computer. ATI sucks in this regard.

Yes. A true TBC ($$) is not required. My used Sima SCC-1 (about $50 on ebay) does just fine. And there are other, even cheaper, MV eliminators that will work.

If your trouble is in fact false MV then yes it would work on that, MV is just a video error that doesn't appear on VCR to TV connection. Only when you try to copy it does it rear it's ugly head. The false MV comes into play when you have older or bad tapes, they contain errors that probably are not visible on your VCR to TV connection but are detected by the card as MV.

I had both a ATI AIW and now my Geforce VIVO card that had this trouble with the same tape. A Sima Go-DVD was able to fix it on the geforce but I never had a chance to try it on the AIW since I returned it because of this issue.

My Sima SCC-1 works on "false" MV also with my ATI 7500 AIW.
