  1. Hi all. I've recently got a DVICO Fusion MPEG2 card which I'm now recording my old videos in MPEG format. Now I've been doing some cut-editing of clips using Ulead Video Studio 7 so I don't get bits of other stuff but I still have to re-convert it to MPEG again which I've noticed has degraded the quality of the clips.

What I want to do is do cut-editing and joining the clips but just want each MPEG to join together and save as 1 MPEG without having to re-convert.

Can anyone recommend any good software that will do this?

I use Mpeg2Schnitt to do all my editing now. Excellent and easy to use (and free) and best of all it has an up-front auto offset adjustment which allows real-time play-back so you can hear if your audio adjustment is in sync, before you save the file.

  3. Hi guys. Thanks for the list of programs. Tried two of them out so far and some problems. The cuttermaran requires some 200mb system file to be downloaded. The Mpeg2Schnitt seems to be weird as it only seems to accept stuff like mp2, mpv but not mpg!!! I renamed a couple of mpegs as mpv in command prompt and the loaded into Mpeg2Schnitt but only able to view about a minute of it and some of the frames are mixed. Can anyone help me out with those programs please.

As for the other two, if only I had a credit card I would be able to order them.

Anyhow thanks and hope I can get to run one of the freebies properly.

Yes Cuttermaran requires the Microsoft .NET framework - a bit of an overhead just to run a program.

Both Cuttermaran and Mpeg2Schnitt requires that the video and audio streams be separated (demuxed) before you can edit them. Demuxing will give you an .MPV video file and an .MPA or .MP2 audio file.

You can use something like TMPGenc or PVAStrumento to demux the MPG file but TMPGenc also lets you put the streams back together again after you have edited them.

    I've told you a million times ... don't exaggerate ! :P

  6. The Womble products (MPEG-VCR and MPEG Video Wizard) don't require demuxing of the MPG (or VOB's or VRO's for that matter) and are frame accurate editors that do not re-encode the video (no quality loss).

Yes, but something that will be more and more common, and certainly integrated in the next Windows version.

  8. Mpeg-vcr DOES re-encode the audio though if you're working with PCM. Just a warning.

  9. Ulead VideoStudio can generate the file without reencoding. Once you drag the clip to your project you must make certain that it either accepted the clip's properties as the projects properties or set the project properties to match the clips. Then on exporting the custom mpeg file, make certain that the smart render check box is set ( i am not certain as to the name of this check box as I always have it checked and cannot remember its name ). It should quickly churn through your file. If it is slow, say more than 10 minutes for a 2 hour movie, then it is probably confused and rerendering ( and you probably have the project settings and output settings different from the clip ).

    Give it a try.

Use Cuttermaran. You should have framework.net anyway as other programs require it and it should be on your computer. Cuttermaran also muxs the two files after editing, if you wish to do so-does a good job.

Isn it the best way to edit an avi file before proceed to encoding in DVD mpeg2 format? Why to have to edit the mpeg2 than edit the avi before that? But which is the best program for simple croping, removing from avi unwanted scenes etc?

It's a bit hard to edit the AVI when your capture card outputs to MPEG-2 from the get-go
