  1. I have an Apex 550 DVD player.

Just the other day, on a whim, I stuck my computer CD with 16 files (1.15Mb/s MPG's) into the Apex... and it plays!

You get a DOS-like menu (the same menu that you get when you put a CD with MP3's into the Apex). You can scroll thru the files to select the one you want.

And guess what? The MPG1's play BETTER than they do when you make a VCD with them. Less pixelization and blockiness.
But, you do not have zoom/FF/RW capability, as when you play a VCD.

I'm not sure why - I think there is additional CPU overhead to enable zoom/FF/RW features, which affects playback. Either that, or perhaps NERO does something to the MPG1 files when it puts the VCD image together?

Anyway -- if you have an Apex 550 DVD player -- you can play your computer CD's on your TV as well.

I am tempted to no longer going to burn any compliant VCD's.

So what was the Resolution of these Mpeg Files?
    Were they VCD Compliant?
I will have to check this one out on my own.

They were the same files. I have MPG1's at VCD-compliant 1.15Mb/s. I made a VCD for playing in my DVD player (using Nero), then I backed up the files from my computer to a CD.

On a whim, I stuck my computer CD into my Apex 550, and it played just fine.

The only difference between the files is that the VCD was created by Nero... and Nero (I think) does something to the files when it puts together the VCD.... either that, or the Apex has to work harder at playing back a VCD, in order to support zoom/FF/RW functions.

Let me know how your testing goes. I was very pleasantly surprised.

  4. Can you explain how you make the cd in detail please? As I understood, you just made data CD with something like NERO simply copying mpeg's on CD? Thanks

I made my VCD with Nero. I dragged-and-dropped my MPG's onto the VCD template, edited my menu stuff, then burned. I did not do anything to the MPG's, other than to ensure they were already at 1.15Mb/s.

The data CD I made with Easy CD Creator. I simply backed up (copied) the MPG's from my Nero folder to my blank CD. It's a regular computer CD with a DOS file system (I can read it on my computer).

  6. I heard the Apex 1500 does the same. I wonder if my Apex 600A does? (5min later) Ok these are all Data Mode 1 discs:

3 Family Guy VCD compliant files: Invaild Entry
1 VCD compliant MPG: Invaild Entry
A movie disc containing MPGs, AVIs, ASFs, WMVs: Read as a 1 track audio cd and played the audio from the files but not picture.

Apex AD-600A does not play non VCD build MPGs. My old Doctor V64 was able to play MPGs straight from disc also with the advertised VCD playback. So I see it as plausable on some players, all depends on the firmware. I was looking to get the AD-1500 for that reason, but so far no one has come up with a way to Demacrovision and all Region it yet.

I have an Apex 550W that I bought about 6 months ago at Kmart for 99$. It has played every MPEG1 that I have put into it. I had a data CD with some non-VCD 3Mb/s MPG1's, and it plays those just fine too. You should see the quality of those 3Mb/s vids -- I'd say it's every bit as good as VHS.

  8. Daewoo 5000N is the best player. It plays EVERYTHING . I tried DVD, VCD, SVCD, XSVCD, and just 2 MPEG files simply burned on CD for storage purposes. AWESOME! Highly recommend this player
