Hi,
I was trying to back up Fahrenheit 9/11 and I extracted all the files using DVD Decrypter. But when I open the main VOB files on my computer, I don't hear any sound. But for all the extras, I can hear sound loud and clear. This is the first time I am seeing this sort of anomaly.
Any thoughts??
Thanks.

Hello,
Try dvdshrink.
KevinDonatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

The VOB's from the main movie contain more than one soundtrack. You can use DVD Decrypter Stream Processing to remap the (usually largest audio stream) corrct stream to Ex080 (syntax probably not correct, but you get the idea). Better yet, uncheck all but the largest ac3 stream.
What your hearing (nothing) might be a DTS stream, and if you don't have a decoder for DTS.......
When you rip a DVD in file mode, with all the audio streams, it seems to reverse the order on playback through WinMedia Player. I usually hear the soundtrack in another language. If only one audio stream is present then the order can't change. Open up the VOB in TMPGEnc "MPEG-Tools / Demultiplex" and you can see if more than one stream exists.
You may have noticed that DVD2AVI gives you the option to select the audio stream you want.

On a side note, i havn't seen that movie yet, but I heard a rumor that it's full of subliminal messages. Have you noticed anything "out-of-the-ordinary" with it?

Hi all.
bappida69, try opening the main IFO file instead.

Click my sig if you want to talk about michael moore
as for the problem, i'd go with what yoda said. Try using DVDshrink.

Why do people have to bring they're politial beliefs into it, I neither know nor care whats true or not in this film, its great entertainment.
This DVD only has a Dolby track so its not a DTS problem.
Did you rip it in File Mode, If so try IFO mode, and vice versa.
Does the sound play when you play the DVD from the IFO file rather than the vobs?

Never just play vob files from a dvd if you want to check if it works. Use a software dvd player like powerdvd, windvd, media player classic and open the video_ts folder or the video_ts.ifo file and play it as a regular dvd.

I'm sure there is at least one player that pick up different audio in the VOB and allows you to switch streams. Any ideas anyone?
I know WMP9 gets on my nerves when I click a VOB to play as it tries to play the DVD if it smells an IFO in the same folderso I never use that

@ Mackem X
I have PowerDVD installed but i prefer to use Media Player Classic. I was just curious about Morgan Stream Switcher.

Thanks for all the responses. I had ripped ALL the files in DVD Decrypter(File Mode) to my Hard Drive. Then I used Power DVD to try opening the main VOB files in the Video_TS folder. But there was no sound. But when I open all the extras with Power DVD, those files have sound.
Even while opening the files in DVD Shrink, I can see just one audio track. I backed up using DVD Shrink as well. But there was no sound.
Any more suggestions.
Thanks..

Great movie!
I backed it up with DVDShrink. The movie has only a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack and fits on one disk without compression.
-
Update.. After using DVD Shrink to backup the movie to a +RW, I played it on my DVD player and lo and behold there was sound!!
Not sure what is happening on the computer with the files though. This is the first time I have seen this.

@bappida69, what version of powerdvd are you using?
powerdvd 4 and above have 5.1 sound but I don't think version 3 has
you need to open the IFO's and not the VOB's with powerdvd also
@gastorgrab, I've seen that but I don't think it works
-
I have Power DVD Version 4(I was looking at the Users manual and it supports Dolby Digital 5.1 sound). I am not sure about opening the IFO's and not the VOBs. The VOBs always, without any exception, works fine for all files!! I guess I am trying to figure the reason so I know whats missing.
Thanks.
-
you open the IFO's with PowerDVD 4 to play the DVD as normal
open PowerDVD and on the control panel click the little drive icon to the left of the play button (you may have different intrerface). Select Open DVD File on Hard Disk Drive (not Open Media Files) and browse to the DVD folder. All you will see are IFO's and not VOB's. Select the VIDEO_TS.IFO and it will play the DVD
-
it's probably because the audio is not in stream 0x80 (stream 1)
which is what PowerDVD plays and only ever plays by default when playing a VOB
I would take a guess that the extras are using stream 0x80 for dolby 2.0 throughout the DVD. The movie will be using something like stream 0x81 which will be 5.1 and why PowerDVD plays no audio
this info about the audio streams is in the IFO is shown in the bottom half of the window when you open it with IFOEdit
at least you know how to play the DVD using the IFO's now

Glad to be of help.
