I have a DELL PowerEdge 1600SC Xeon server running Windows 2000 Advanced Server. I know that it's recommeneded that when you switch from a single CPU to dual CPUs that you install the OS and Apps from scratch to take advantage of SMP. My question is, since the Xeon (2.0GHz/400MHz/512K) is seen as 2 logical processors by the server and the OS, will I need to reinstall if I upgrade to a second physical processor?

Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

Shouldn't need to. The chipset is configured for SMP wether it's available or not and the operating system configures itself for the chipset. You should just be able to plug in the second CPU and boot.

Yes that would be best. Although 2000 AS will
recognise the 2nd cpu at boot, HT is not a pure
logical unit and is not treated as such by services
although it is reported by device manager. SMP
will work on reboot, but certain config settings
may be missing. This is not an issue with 2003. -
you should really not run HT on your xeons in a true dual system

your right -- but the DELL PowerEdge 1600SC uses the old style buss and memory interface , so i doubt if any benefit (usually slower) .. that is a real good stable system though ... built like a tank -- at least the 1600 's i have had going back to dual 300's
