  1. I had some VHS home movies that I had put on DVD professionally. No chapters or editing was added, just the movie. My intent was to rip the DVD onto my computer, edit it myself and add chapters, then burn the finished project. I successfully did this using Sonic MyDVD. However, the finished DVDs would not play correctly in all players (namely my Xbox.) They played fine in all others.

Some people on here suggested trying a different program to author the DVD, which I did. I burned some 30 second video clips (downloaded from a website) using Nero. The finished DVD played fine in all my players.

I tried taking the Sonic MyDVD video and opening it with Nero Vision Express, but it wouldn't work. So I tried taking the original DVD and ripping it using Nero (essentially starting over from scratch.) However, it says that the files aren't supported. I also tried ripping it with Ulead Video Studio 7 and Windows Movie Maker.

Why can I only rip the DVD with Sonic, but not the other programs? If none of these programs are any good, can someone suggest one that is? Thanks.

MyDVD is not a ripping pogram. You want DVDShrink or DVDDecrypter.

MyDVD attempts to be an all-in-one capturing, editing, authoring and burning app, and does poorly at all those.

It also sounds like you have a media issue with the one that wouldn't play in the Xbox but plays in the other players.

My suggestion: rip using one of the apps I mentioned. Open the .VOB files with VirtualDub, or Nero Vision Express, or Womble MPEG Video Wizard. Add your chapters and menus. Author with any of the freeware tools in the tools section here. Burn with Nero, or with a freeware app.

Try different media for compatibility with the x-box. Do a forum search for "xbox media" to find what others are using.

And do yourself a favor - take MyDVD out to the dumpster and slam-dunk it. It's a POS, and a constant irritation with owners.

  3. Thanks Capmaster, very helpful. I'll try your suggestions.

You're right, MyDVD is complete waste of time and money. I bought it so I could hook up my VCR and transfer all my home videos. The results sucked.

I'm gonna go with Cap on this, I think the xbox is probably more particular to the type of media it wil accept.

  5. I tried Maxell, Memorex, Sony, Fujifilm, and TDK and they all played funky in two Xboxes. Sometimes they worked ok, but usually would skip and drop frames.

Capmaster, when you say that MyDVD isn't a ripping program, what exactly do you mean? Is it not a good ripping program? Because I did manage to extract the video onto my computer using it.

Also, I checked out DVD Shrink and it looks pretty high-tech to this amateur. Does it always compress the video after it rips it (hence the term Shrink?) Or is that just one feature in the program?

    Thanks.

Dvdshrink will only compress dvds that are over 4.37gb,any less and it will just transfer the files to your hdd.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

Those are good media types Maybe the xbox laser lens is dirty?

MyDVD is an all-in-one. If it rips too, that's just another thing it claims to do, but is probably marginal. You're better off with a separate ripping app.

DVDShrink is settable to automatic or manual. If set to automatic, it'll rip and shrink so you can fit the resulting files on one DVD. If you're ripping from a single-layer DVD (less than 4.38GB) it won't shrink at all. Again, you can set it to anything you want on manual. It's a great app and well worth learning

Thanks Just sharing something I learned the hard way.

My adventures with MyDVD were during the worst two months of my video noobishness 2-1/2 years ago. I had a capture box that was almost intentionally designed to screw up lip sync, and an app (MyDVD) that wouldn't even see its own files correctly. And when I authored with it, it would invariably get 95% done ...over an hour of transcoding having passed, and it would error out, saying the file was non-dvd-compliant. Its own capture file

And the sad thing is ..it doesn't appear that it's any better now with the newer revisions. I've been watching posts here about MyDVD. Their main market seems to be people who get their first capture hardware, and MyDVD gets bundled with it. The customers are usually new at video, and don't know anything about good apps versus bad ones. Many people give up on the hobby because of this one app, not realizing that there is so much out there that is excellent software.

It's shameless market targeting at its worst, and on a par with spamming on my morals meter :P

Let me know (post or PM) when you get things up and running

I have read where xbox only works with dvd rom, so you will need a burner that can bitset. (also known as booktype). It just changes the way the DVD will be read, most burners can do this with either firmware of software.

  11. I'm trying to decide what editor program I will use. I need to cut out some video and paste it in the middle, but with Nero Vision Express it looks like you can only cut, but not paste. Am I overlooking something, or is this true? Perhaps I should try Virtualdub? Thanks

  12. I need some major help. I've successfully ripped a DVD using DVDShrink. I opened the file with Sonic MyDVD and edited it, but the file size is too big to be burned. I don't understand this, because it fits on the DVD that I ripped it from.

Then I tried to open it up with Nero Vision Express, but it only imports about 30 seconds of video. It says that certain files aren't supported.

What did I do wrong when I ripped the DVD, since the file size somehow increased? And why can't I import that video correctly with Nero? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This dilemma has consumed all of my free time!

Try demuxing the MPEG into elementary video and audio streams using Vobrator. Then open both in Nero Vision Express. You should be able to then edit and save normally.

  15. The DVD is not commercial. I had it professionally done.

How come the file size increased when I ripped it with DVDShrink? Also, I'm pretty sure it was demuxed when I ripped it. (Separate video and audio files were made.

You need to be more specific. What file? Did the size increase after you edited? If so, then you probably re-encoded.

  17. The video file containing the DVD that I ripped is what I'm referring to. The DVD is a standard 4.7 gb, but when I ripped it with DVDshrink and went to burn it with another program, it wouldn't fit onto a blank DVD.

How do I re-encode it? Does DVDShrink do that? Thanks.

Why would you rip with Shrink and then burn with something else? You said you edited the file. Plus I am still not sure what file you mean. Shrink will not create just one file if you urip a dvd, unless yo are in iso mode, in which case you couldn't edit it. Are you talking about a vob file?

  19. I'm using the VOB files. I need to edit the video (cut and paste some parts, delete some parts) and create chapters and a menu. You can't do that with DVDShrink.
