  1. I got a cyberhome 500 to play vcds last year and it recently started glitching once in a while...very annoying.

I cleaned the laser and get the same thing. Can I just replace the dvd drive in it with another IDE drive or does it HAVE to be this model?

It's just a regular IDE drive cyberdrive Model No. Dp029D

    Thanks!

Sorry that I do not know the answer but I have a Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 and absolutely love it (mostly for the region free and PAL to NTSC conversion capabilites).

I understand trying to get away for "cheap" but you can buy a brand new Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 direct from the CYBERHOME WEBSITE for $79.95 USD plus shipping.

  4. I have replaced my drive on that unit. It cost me $55.00 for a memorex DVDRom. So like FulciLives says, you might just want to buy another player. But then again your taking a risk of having the drive go bad on that one to. Other people have had this problem to.

I went with the memorex cause it was the only one that actually said it plays all DVD formats. The other ones might do it to but they don't say.
Installation was quite easy the only retrofit is the tray door.

  7. KEwl, I think I'm gonna just try something like that. If it doesn't work, I'll just put it in a computer for someone.

    Thanks for the help.

2 things to remember, you might know already.

1.You have to put the new DVDrom in your computer and set your region code.
2.Install the jumper for Master when installing it in your DVD player. The DVD player drives (or loaders as they call them) do not use jumpers.

What I did was I had another DVDRom laying around so I decided to try it out before I went out to purchase one. I didn't remove the defective drive (loader), I just took the cables off and placed them in the new drive sitting on top of the old drive (loader). Once I knew it would work, off I went.

    Drives that work:

    Toshiba 1712
    Lite-on 163 and 166

    Drives that don't work

    Hitachi 7500
    Artec G40

I wonder why some drives work but others won't?

  10. There is some helpful information that may explain why some of the models tried don't work at:

    http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/loader_replacement/loader_replacement.htm

    http://www.bob-lafleur.net/600advd

However, the Cyberhome is a little different. My loader (I assume) died (doesn't play CDs or DVDs), and so I popped in a Toshiba M1202, which is what the site recommends, but it didn't work.

Anybody have another list of which models work in a 500?

  11. pruss,
I installed a memorex drive as I stated above. I don't remember the model # but if your interested I will look it up. Just one question, did you set the region code on the toshiba and made sure you have the jumper on master? Just asking to make sure.

  12. The Toshiba is an RPC-1 drive (at least if you don't bother to upgrade the firmware) so there is no region setting (anyway, the drive has worked fine in our PC since 1998 or so). I tried it with both a master jumper and no jumper. With master jumper, it played CDs only. Without it, it played nothing.

  13. It would be nice to have a fuller list of what works and what doesn't... This would help those of us who don't have a spare drive and need to buy one on ebay...

  14. I installed an old (1997) Creative 2240E 2X drive from a DXR2 kit. Works great. I can't get the 500's front cover to fit over the front of the loader (it doesn't close properly), but that's OK--it just looks a little funny with the set back loader. (Oh, and to make sure the tray would go in and out, I put a thin piece of cardboard to raise the loader.)
