is there any decent programs like laplink that are maybe free(?), I have a data transfer usb cable(?), but I cant find the old program I used to use.

ps: thanks to all those who helped me yesterday

For transferring large files, usb is NOT the way to go as usb is limited to 11 Mbits/s.

You want to use Firewire (if you have one) which is more stable and efficient with transfer speeds up to 400 Mbits/s

  4. Win98c has the ability to setup a cable transfer
using usb 2 usb. From memory it is very slow
    though

just use the "Create a new connection" wizard in the Network Connection and choose the last option which is to connect directly to another PC... The other machine also needs to run the same wizard... (i believe it's called something else in win98... can't be too certain here)
ONe configured as a host and the other as a guest. Then you can use it to transfer files.

If I was you I'd simply hook up two Network cards
and a "reversed network rj cable' and setup both
    PC's for networked transfer.
