  1. Hey guys. I've got my new Samsung mini DV hooked up to my PC (Win XP s/p 2) and I can control the camera and capture video with both VEgas (4) and Ulead Movie studio (bundle), but I can't get sound no matter how I try.

First thing I'm wondering, does my firewire card need to have an audio cable attached to it? I wouldn't think so, but maybe that's it?

I've scoured the ent as best as I know how and so I'm resorting to this post. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

are you capturing to dv .avi's? both video and audio should come across the single firewire connection.

You won't hear the audio during capture (using some software), but it should be in the dv .avi file on your hard drive.

What OS are you running, and which version of DirectX?

What are you using to playback the captured videos?

Have you tried DV Type-1 and/or DV Type-2?

  3. Wow! Thanks for the quick response!

Ok, the first thing is: there's no way to have audio in the preview? IF it's a software issue, what software would allow it? If I'm capturing part of a speech, it's way beter if I can hear audio to grab sections.

    Other info:
What format is best (quality-wise) for me to be capturing to?
OS is Win XP, Direct X 9.0, I believe.

And I don't know anything about the dv1/dv2 question. Can you explain that to me?

    Thanks again!!

so is there audio in a captured dv .avi file? and the problem is that you cannot hear it during the capture process?

for type-1 vs. type-2, just do a web search on dv type-1 vs. type-2 and you should get alot of hits...

  5. Last night my files were audio-less. It seems to be working now. Not sure what I changed, though.

Still, no audio in preview. Can that be fixed?

Thanks a million for your tips!

depends on the capture software. some of them allow you to hear the audio during capture. I find it annoying at times because I basically capture an entire tape. But for others it might work better capturing smaller segments.

I use Ulead's MediaStudio Pro 7.x Software, and there is a capture program that allows you to hear the audio as it is captured.

Before that, I used to just up the volume on the input source (camcorder or whatever).

I'm sure there are other dv capture tools that allow you to hear the audio during capture (I just haven't had the need to look for one...)

  7. Cool. I'll check that software out.
I guess I can always just unload the tape and then chop it up after too.

    Thanks a million!!

Maybe your speakers were turned off.

  9. For capturing in Vegas you might need to enable audio preview. It's somewhere in the options in the capture module. The preview isn't all that great in quality in my experience, but it's usable.
