  1. Everything was working beautifully for almost a year but all of a sudden the dvdplayer will not play SVCD's or any CD at all..but will play any kind of DVD no problem!

Here is what it can and can't play:

    working:
    DVD retail plays fine
    DVD-r/DVD+r plays fine

    not working:
VCD/SVCD/MP3 CDR/Jpeg on CDR (many brands like maxell, ritek, tdk)
Audio CD Retail no longer works also!
So basically it will not play any kind of CD at all, retail or recordable.

Does anyone know if this unit is damaged? I don't understand why the lazer would read DVD but not CD..is it possible that it has lost calibration or that their is two lazer pickups and one is worn out?
i have unplugged the unit and tried several times to no avail..All that happens is you hear the Disks spin up/down make odd noises...

The only thing i did which might of caused this is I remember turning off the TV while the DVD player was still playing a SVCD at the end of the movie credits...could turning off the TV cause a power surge? DVD player is plugged into the same outlet power bar..

  2. OMG, I fixed it!

While attempting to play an SVCD I decided to go to the APEX DVD main setup menu, and see if I could make any changes. Suprisingly I was able to enter the menu sytem, and also the SVCD Disk appeared to stop spinning. I choose to "RESORE ALL Defaults" to factory settings and then back to main. Imediately afterwords the DISK spun up quietly and the word "INIT" (intiitalizing) appeared on the players front panel screen, it just stayed there for awhile so I held the ENTER/Play button on remote down for a little bit ,then all of a sudden SVCD text appears on screen and movie started to play. Ever since that episode, movies play no problem from then on. I can turn the unit off, back on , it operates completely normal now..go figure...lol
So my guess is that somehow the Firmware/DVD players memory managed to get messed up. I guess these glitches could happen, the svcd that worked the last time properly before this scenario had been encoded with a fairly low bitrate in order to fit about 1 hours worth of video onto a single 80 min disk.
Anyways, people should try this if you ever have any problems with your standalone dvd players..the units may not be damaged physically after all.
    Adios amigos...
