  1. I've tried two different Xboxes (one modded, the other not) and have problems playing my DVD-Rs (Maxell). Sometimes they'll play ok, but if you fast-forward or change the chapter, the picture starts "skipping." The discs play fine on other players. From what I've read on this site, most people don't have a problem with their Xbox DVD players.

Does anyone know what causes this, and how i might fix it? Thanks.

A search in DVD players (<<<<< at left) would have brought the answer:

  3. I read through those comments and it seems that the older model Thompson drive Xboxes give people problems. Mine is a brand new Samsung, as is my brother's (which is modded.) The Samsung drives should work ok, but they don't.

The fact that the drive is Samsung doesn't make it magic. There's a greater probability but, as you have experienced, it's not guaranteed.

I've been very successfull with TDK DVD-R. (with a Samsung drive)

Try different brands until you find the one that works. In my experience, I find -R better.

  6. I've tried 5 different types of media, same problem. -R's worked much better than +R's.

Pretty much everyone in those reviews said that dvd-Rs worked fine on their Xbox, cheap media or not. The only problems I read about were with the old Thompson drives.

What might cause the skipping? Is it the DVD itself, or the player? Like I said, they play fine in four other players I've tested. I just wish they played ok in my Xbox.

    Bort,

If the xbox has no problems with a pressed disk then the problem is with the DVD-R.

My only advice is try different ones. I can say that I tried at least a dozen until I stopped at TDK (pricier but hassle-free). Won't go back!

I always use +R's in my XBOX. I used TDK for a while and now I use Memorex and they both work great. Good luck.
Edit --> Oh and I always burned with Nero

  9. Well, I've tried TDK and Fujifilm and they still skip in the Xbox. The audio plays fine. If I hit fast-forward, then reverse, then hit play, it usually plays ok. It will then play ok for the rest of the video. But, if i change a chapter or just fast-forward, it skips again. Sometimes it plays but drops frames.

I guess what I want to know is if this is a burn issue, an Xbox issue, a media issue, or what. Like I said, the discs play fine in other players, just not in the two Xboxes I've tried.

You might try a different burning program, or diff settings in your current burning app, or a different burner if you have access to one. Try burning from iso in dvddecryptor. I've found differences in compatability using same discs, same prog, but different burners, many factors can affect compatability. Most of my prodic 8x white top discs burned by TMPGEnc Author 1.6 burning app in lg 4120 will play in my unmodded x-box, (or should I say my kid's unmodded x-box.)

I've got a 1.4 (or was it 1.5) Xbox with a samsung drive. So far the safest bet has been Ricoh +Rs bitset to DVD-Rom. Hasn't failed me yet. I always burn movies with Recordnow, and backups with Nero.

  12. I tried burning a disk with Nero last night and my Xbox played it ok. Maybe it was the program I was using after all (Sonic MyDVD.) However, it was just a 30 second video clip I got online; the real test will see if it works on my home movies. Thanks for the replies.
