Hello,
Yes it is true. Last night about 5:10pm est time I bought my widescreen set at Best Buy. $45 wasn't too bad!![]()
I started and finished watching Episode 4 A New Hope last night. Excellent remix. Jabba looks better too, less goofy.
Changes:
When the Falcon is captured by the Death Star and two Stormtroopers check for passengers a line was added: one trooper says: "There's No One Here" - really unnecessary but was added anyway.
The Darth Vader lightsaber was colored red properly at the end of the Obi Wan fight when Vader approaches the closing blast door (will post screen shots tonight).
Jabba the Hut added scene - Jabba is definetely improved, more robust and fuller looking (will post screen shot)
--------------------
That's about all I can remember right now. Two things that weren't corrected STILL:
When Han and Leia talk about R2 carrying the station plans. Darth Vader clearly says they have just made the jump into hyperspace before that scene but the starscape outside is still NORMAL - no hypertunnel effect.
The countdown clock on the death star. Starts at 30 minutes but is NEVER accurate after that.
--------------------------
There, I am thrilled to have finally gotten it. I will back them up tonight.
I did see part of the Bonus Disc including the Episode 3 preview (all about the Darth Vader MaskWorth Seeing, and watched the original trailers - awesome!
Will post more later. Have not watched Empire or Jedi yet. Will soon.

Hello,
Just remembered another change in Episode 4:
During the Death Star battle Lukes squad leader is being tailed by Vader. In the original original no warning is given. In the Special Edition Luke is heard saying "He's on your tail". That line is removed in this the 3rd version of the movie. FYI.

Actually, I've only covered Episode 4, I haven't gotten to 5 or 6 yet.
In my defense, Most of this has been available on the net for the last WEEK or so.

Hello,
Makntraks - Not a fan of most Star Wars parodies, this included. Though i'm sure others will appreciate the comic.

As promised here are the screen shots. On the left are the special edition widescreen vhs shots (from the 2000 release). On the right are the brand new dvds. (sorry if the crops aren't equal)

This next one is just a pet peeve of mine. It's after the falcon escapes the death star. Vader had told Moff Tarkin the ship had just made the jump into hyperspace. So in the very next shot of Han and Leia talking there should be a hyperspace tunnel in the cockpit window. Yet in the 3rd remake it is STILL a normal starfield:

I'd have to watch it to get it in full context but... Its not like hyperspace travel should take all that long. It seems to me they made the jump to lightspeed and then almost instantaneously got to wherever they were headed, so they slowed down. Cut to next scene.
It always looked to me like when you make that jump to lightspeed you better sit down and buckle up. They couldn't have much of a conversation while traveling like that, so you see them right afterwards.
thedigitalbits has alot of comparison shots for all three movies. I think most of them are either so minor you'd never notice, or definite improvements. I hated that Jabba scene when it first came out, but it looks better now. That scene either had to be improved upon or just cut cause the SE looked ridiculous with it. -

Got my set last night at Wally World for $41.
OK - I know they are the re-re-re-mastered "original vision" versions. But, I have to say the transfer to DVD is very good. I did some side-by-side comparisons of my best Definitive Collection LD captures and the new DVD... it's not even close. The color, detail, black level, it all looks so much better. I've got a 46" DLP HDTV hooked up to an upscaling DVD player, so these improvements over the LD set are really noticeable.
I sure wish Lucas had included the original theatrical versions, though. -

GREAT TV!!!!
By the way, I think we should start calling these dvds "VERSION 3.0" to avoid confusion. What do you think???
