Was it like that on the VHS versions? Sounds definitely like something in the digital processing for DVDs that would work, but I never saw this with the VHS versions. They always seemed to be in the Letter boxing at the bottom.

    Hello,

That's what adam meant. The screenshot on the left was from the special edition (second release in 2000) vhs. The right was from the dvd on my pcdvdrom using powerdvd. The vhs closed caption is on the black bar. The dvd is encoded on the picture when it is NOT on a normal 4:3 tv. At least that was my understanding of what adam wrote.

I still need to get SE theater release versions on DVD. I hoping to get some from someone, but I haven't heard back and it doesn't look like it's going to happen. They're LD transfers of SE v2.0, so the quality will be better than what I'm trying to do with VHS versions.

    Hello,

Why bother??? The changes from version 2.0 se to version 3.0 dvds aren't that big. I'm happy with the dvds.

Because I want them. I have the unremasted versions of THX 1138 and THX 1138:4EB. I just recently got the SE releases of them. Just got them, because I'm a collector.

Most anamorphically encoded DVDs have multiple subtitle streams. One places the subs over the letterboxing, since that's what people prefer, and the other places it over the picture, since that is what is required when viewed in 16:9 mode. Switching between the display modes switches which subtitle is displayed. If you rip the subs from the DVD you can compare the bitmaps and see how the location of the subs differs.

The VHS versions didn't have this because the subs have to be hard encoded.

To answer your question, the film in the cinema had subs in the picture (duh) as did the VHS releases. the SE's moved the subs to the letterbox bar on the widescreen releases. there's some info on this in the Star Wars LD transfer thread, and sub scripting.

When it comes to subtitles, unless it's a foregin film in a foreign language, that's usually the first track to get omitted, unless it's required (IE: Star Wars). If there are foreign language dubs, they are also among the first things to be dropped from a back-up. I really do not care to learn the Swahili version of Star Wars, nor the Farsi version with integrated ebonics.

    Hello,

Found another change. When Obi Wan deactivates the tractor beam the original text on the display said "Power". Now it's been converted to imperial text. I'll post a snap shot tonight when I get home.

    Hello,

Thank you! Actually I finally got a chance to do it myself. First shot is from my widescreen vhs A New Hope SE (released in 2000 - I bought the fullscreen when they first released the SE in 97). It clearly says "Power" in English.

This next one is from the dvd. It is rewritten into Imperial as seen in Jedi.

Sorry for the darkness. Powerdvd is great for snapshots but captures at a dark level. I tried brightnening them a little though.

    Hello,

I found out my earlier snapshots of vhs were small because I used the wintv2000 program that came with my card. This time I actually recorded the scene in mpeg2 dvd format for a few seconds. Then I played the file in powerdvd and took the snapshot. I resized it for posting here but it looks much clearer and larger. Kind of strange huh???

    Hello,

I just finished listening to the commentary on all 3 movies. It's really good. I think in a way it was worth waiting this long for the dvds. Now that the prequel trilogy is almost complete there's a whole new perspective on the original "middle" trilogy.

WOOKIES are going to be in Episode 3!!!!! Lucas says so in the Return of the Jedi commentary!

Ewoks were supposed to be the Wookies, but after the Star Wars Holiday Special bombed, he rewrote it. However, they were still living in the trees and made animal howls and rolling groans. It's like he just dwarfed them and made them fuzzy instead of wooly (and he clothed them too).

    Hello,

Not exactly. He made the wookie the copilot so they were technically inclined. He needed primitives in JEDI to help stop the stormtroopers so he put the Ewoks there. (I just finished the JEDI commentary this past weekend)

    Hello,

    Rookie64 - Thanks!

I think maybe I should check the brightness on my monitor, maybe that affects powerdvd. Anyway, I have a basic editor that came with my scanner and it has a brightness adjuster. I just didn't increase it enough. It seems like it needs to be 10 notches higher (10%???) than what its screen capped at.

He did that when he was creating the story for Return of the Jedi. Check out the SPFX and Making of StarWars from the 80's. They don't talk about it in the SE commentary. When Lucas was filming episode 4, he had the idea of the wookie planet having the Shield generator because of the technically gifted wookies. When the Horrible botch from the holiday Special made it's appearance, he became embarassed and altered his thoughts and wrote out the forrest moon sequence. It was always a forrest moon, but he called it Endor in the actual script. As he filmed episode 5 he thought why would the wookies be helping the empire build a shield generator for a Death Star. He instead made it seem like the Imperial force build it on a moon with early development life forms. Thus came the Ewoks. E-Wok = Wookie, as in a slightly backwards from the original characters they were supposed to be. Lucas doesn't admit to much of anything anymore that could be related to the Holiday Special.
