  1. I am new at this and trying to test with a small AVI.
I used VirtualDub to generate the first 5 minutes of a longer AVI.
I convert the video portion of the AVI to MPG using TmpGenc and the process goes to 100%.
Is it supposed to display 'finished'? Because it doesn't.
I have not extracted the audio yet.
In any case, when I play back the MPG using VLC, the video runs OK for about 5 seconds, the progress bar continues to move but the video does not progress.
    All assistance is appreciated.

The status bar will be all the way across and says 100%, if I remember right. I believe it also has an audible 'ding' upon completion.

    VLC?

Run TMPGEnc with the uncut AVI and specify the AVI as the video and audio source. Turn on preview and let it run. Stop TMPGEnc when it reaches whatever point in the movie you want. When TMPGEnc finishes writing the MPG file, you can use VLC to play it.

But I am trying to follow the instructions from here
    http://dvd-hq.info/Compression.html

that specify to extract the video * only * with TmpGenc and use another tool for the audio. After the video portion I was trying to get the results.
    Am I doing something wrong?

    TIA.

My experience with TMPGEnc is that it will get to 100% before it has actually completed the entire encoding process. It's not actually done until the "start" button is no longer grayed out.
